I know I have been gone for awhile. Since I found out I was pregnant I kind of retreated from the website. I hope my inactivity on the site doesn't stop people from reading this blog. It's very important to me.
Some of you may know that It took me and my husband a long, long time to get pregnant. I lost a good about of weight about 30 lbs and bam there is was a nice bright positive sign on my pregnancy test! I couldn't have been happier and more scared at the same time. I knew I always wanted a child but I also knew I had a long way still to be healthy. I'm still obese and I still have concerns for the baby.
I always had this fear in the back of my mind that my obesity would cause some kind of issues in my pregnancy. Like high blood pressure.. gestational diabetes.... anything and everything associated with me being overweight. My first trimester went by very well. I didn't have morning sickness besides a little queasiness but I was still able to eat and all. I gained a couple lbs which was fine... being overweight my pregnancy weight gain should be less than those at normal weight so I was on the right track. Well around week 10 I noticed I was itching slightly but I put it aside as I have mild eczema and sensitive skin. Come my second trimester the itching intensifies greatly and I also notice I am much more nauseas and have little to no appetite( I weigh less now than i have in over 6 years. i've lost over 15 lbs since i got pregnant). I make an appointment with my dr. and give her my symptoms. She sends me for blood test and they come back that my liver function enzymes are through the roof. They refer me to a specialist who then runs more liver test and an ultrasound for my liver.
Well turns out I have been diagnosed with ICP/ cholestasis of pregnancy. It's a very rare condition that develops during pregnancy. It usually is genetic but in my case i'm just one unlucky girl. With this condition my liver does not filter out the bile that my body produces correctly and the extra bile acids end up in my blood steam and in turn causes extreme itching ( imagine the hottest day of the summer rolling in itchy grass naked and not being able to take a shower all day long, yes that kind of itching) and a few other symptoms. It usually develops during the third trimester but I guess i'm just one of the lucky ones who got it early :/ It can cause distress on the baby late in pregnancy and more times than not mommy is induced about a month early to avoid the elevated risk of stillbirth that is associated with this condition.
I'm now on medication and doing much better and I'm being monitored properly. Well I guess the whole point of my blog is to inform. There is little known about this condition even doctors don't know much about it. On top of informing whoever I can, is I want to make a point that health and "losing weight" are truly different battles. This disease has nothing to do directly with being overweight. Small thin presumably healthy people develop this same condition. But had I kept a healthy diet and my liver been strong and healthy whether or not I was overweight my chances of getting this condition would have been much smaller... The food we put into our body does more than add lbs to our frame.. causing us to wear a larger number in clothes or not being comfortable in our own skin. it damages our organs.. it hurts us from the inside out. cutting calories and losing the weight doesn't mean we are healthy... we truly need to nourish our bodies and fuel them with good foods.
I never thought I would have an issue in my pregnancy that wasn't because of my obesity but I did. I just want to put the word out there about this condition. If you want to learn more about it. go to itchymoms.com If you or anyone you know develops severe itching during pregnancy let them know and they need to see their doctor about it.
sorry so long and thank you for taking the time to read it.
