The word "Diet"

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Over the weekend I went out to eat with some close friends of mine, these are friends who LOVE a good steak slathered with butter, fully dressed baked potatoes, ceaser salads, 3 or 4 root beers and then a loaf (each mind you) of bread! Yes, folks that is a typical meal for these folks! it kills me to go out to eat with them! however, I sit there with my chicken dish, steamed veggies, side salad with no cheese or croutons, etc. and I do indulge with a couple beers, but I have researched and logged my choices. I hear them say OH yeah, i have to get back on my "diet" monday, I hear this all the time from all of them, it's a standard! Yet I bite my tongue and try and be supportive, I said why don't you try a "lifestyle change" instead of a diet and of course got laughed at. I started thinking about the word Diet, such a thrown around word in my opinion, it's used over and over and by anyone and everyone and it carries alot of different meanings! to me the word diet implies a Beginning and an End! So one can say I'm going on a Diet but then whenever they want, they can say OH I'm off my diet! which gives them full permission to PIG OUT! which my friends do weekly, monthly, oh hell, daily! So I guess, My wish is that someone would Slay the word diet and start teaching folks the good ol' lifestyle change!!!! I choose to make changes that I can live with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly! I know I will slip up and I'm OK with that, I know that should not warrant me going all out and then getting back on the wagon! I sure hope alot of others feel the same! Thank you for letting me rant! now back to your regular programming!

Thank you Ladies!!! I'm glad I have a place to post this and not get laughed at or grilled for it!

You are right GRACEMCC45 it takes focus and determination, but once you do it, it's easy! It shouldn't be a deprivation, but a better understanding of portion control and what your body needs and/or wants! I have cheat meals, I think we all should be allowed to do that, but in moderation! Good for all of you, making good changes! Being on SPARK is a mighty good start!!!!

I love this post! Even when I catch myself using the word Diet, you'd think I would have said a curse word. The way I react is priceless. This is my new life! :) emoticon

I couldn't agree more with you. Good for you for sticking with healthier food choices when around others who were overindulging. emoticon emoticon

Oh it's definitely a lifestyle change that people need to look at.

I changed my lifestyle 180 degrees. Do I still have free days that I can eat what I want? Yes - because in this lifestyle change, I've allotted for that every 1-2 weeks, no longer a daily or on a whimsy.

It's also about your attitude, exercise, sleep, hydration, mindset, etc. It's the whole package, not just the food intake.
