Travelling is hard on my nutrition tracking

Monday, September 03, 2012

I mean, we ate at a West African restaurant today. I had cassava greens over rice - this was one of my favorite meals in Liberia, cassava greens pounded in a mortar and pestle to soften them up, then stewed for hours with some palm oil.

You'd think SparkPeople would have cassava greens in the tracker, wouldn't you?

I don't know WHAT I'm going to do when we get some REALLY strange food, LOL!

Yeah, I tracked them as collard greens. Or maybe spinach. Had to improvise.

Awww we used to have an African restaurant and it closed. Don't recall them having cassava greens but they had an awesome peanut soup. I usually skipped the steaks and had their sides. Yum! I've no idea what those greens taste like , might have to approximate say, kale or collards or turnip greens, whatever seems to taste the most similar.

YUM emoticon ...I haven't had cassava greens in forever. I enjoy virtual travel, but looks like I'm going to have to join you if you keep eating foods like this. emoticon

You are too funny, but right. Our tracking is geared pretty much to American food. Even when I put a chinese dish in I have to tear it apart to approximate nutritional values. I guess some of us need to start doing that so that all of us can benefit.
Have fun.

Best I can find is there are 73 calories in boiled, young cassava leaves - no amount listed!

It isn't the sort of thing you find in many places.

On the other hand, at one point the nutrition tracker had the nutritional values of breast milk..........

Hey, but you can look it up and put it in -- next time it will be there for us all! :)

I ended up putting it in as spinach, since DH said it tasted like spinach - but now I'm thinking maybe I should have tried kale or collards as the veg, because cassava greens have a ton of fiber.

Ah well, it was tasty, I know greens are healthy, and I also know they aren't high cal. So I'll just kind of fake it as we go.

Sometimes you can find it if you play with the wording. Greens maybe?

Great point. We eat pretty exotic on several nights a week and tracking is a big chore. We were camping this weekend and I didn't even bother. I'll weigh in tomorrow and assess the damage
