The race....hmmmm... not too sure I enjoyed it that much. For starters I slept in, somehow set my alarm half an hour later than I intended. Not the best start. I got to my car park before the road closures so that was fine but the footpath to access to the race venue had been fenced off. A lot of unhappy people as no-one had told us about this, but we worked out how navigate around the fencing so no big deal in the end. The weather was sunny and a little too warm, I really was sweating after the warm up before we even got into the pens. Once we got started it was difficult to find my pace with so many people. Usually the crowd thins between one and two Kms but this didn't seem to happen this year. I ran without walk intervals upto 6K then set my watch to 4mins:45secs ratio. This was working okay until the hills where I had to walk at the wrong time which messed up the timings a little! I really struggled on the last couple of kms it was just too hot. I had been checking the time at each marker to try and come in under the hour but by 8K I really didn't care anymore and just wanted it over. I did manage a bit of a sprint for the last 200-300m but this just made me nauseous at the end! My finish time was 1 hour and 2 seconds! Given the conditions I should be happy with the time but overall I just didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. On the plus side my heel felt fine during the race and is still okay now, but I do have sore big toes as a result of my bunions, I think perhaps I will try a half size up in my next running shoes.
