A new trailer! While I was at work, Jim took the icky wood flooring off the utility trailer we had bought used several years ago. We used it a few times for getting the snow blower to and from the shop. The idea was to replace the floor and wiring way back then, and use it for our bikes, but it never happened. Had been in the garage now for 3 or 4 years. So today Jim pulled the flooring and really got a look see under for the frame and stuff. He was not thrilled.
He picked me up at work, and we went to Northern Hydraulics. Originally the thought was to get a new wiring harness and taillights, and a new coupler for the hitch ball. Estimated cost was around $100 or so. Then we would get some wood to replace the flooring. Based on what Jim found under the old wood for holes, would determine if we would do a sheet of 4 x 8 plywood or be able to use planks. From what he found for holes in the framework, we would have to do a plywood sheet, or drill a bunch of holes in the metal. So the cost of a sheet of plywood and stainless steel bolts and paint to protect the wood would add more to the repairs. Maybe another $75 to $100. And we would have to buy ramps to get the ATV up and down the trailer. Nice ones are not cheap, $150 or so. At this point we are getting close to about half the price of a new small trailer.
Then there is the aggravation of having to do all that to get it up and running. Based on Jim's observations of the trailer and discussing it on the way there we decided to look at the new trailers instead. Decided to go with a 5 x 8 trailer instead of the 4 x 6 ft one. This gives us room to add a box for stuff and not be so cramped. You all know how stuff multiplies.
So we came home and swapped cars since mine has a hitch on it. Went back and got the trailer and that is now home and safe in sound in the garage also. Bought a tongue jack and will get a spare wheel for it in a week or so. Also got straps for tying down the ATV. They are having a sale in a week so will get the spare tire then, and maybe a box I saw in their catalog for $40.
No pictures yet with all the running around. We want to rearrange the garage some so it's not so crowded looking. We may go out to the club after I work on Sunday and practice riding. At least I suggested it. Will see how it goes. Jim would like to put two wood planks on top of the mesh metal floor to give more strength to the floor when the ATV is on it. This trailer has a ramp/gate on the back so no problems for loading and unloading.
Whew- been a whirlwind day, no walking, ate at Hardee's on the run. Kicked back with a movie after 8 am. I will be a zombie in the morning, but was nice to relax and watch it.
Off to bed now.
