I'm back! Week 3 C25K progress

Thursday, August 30, 2012

I'm back! After a long month of being busy and being sick, I'm back!! Man have I missed my SP family!

I ended up getting a sinus infection early on in the month which I lovingly referred to as "the plague". I did my best to fight it off with home remedies, over the counter meds, and Kung Fu to not avail. Finally I went to the doc and she told me to take it easy and rest during recovery. That lasted a whole two days.

After missing two whole classes, I made it back to Kung Fu on Tuesday. The form I'm learning now Xiao Hok Hua Quan (Small Crane Flower Fist) has a lot of ground fighting techniques in it so that means I'm rolling around on the ground, doing cartwheels, etc. That translates into LOTS OF CARDIO. This class, I came to a particularly difficult section of my form where I have to do a forward roll into a jumping turning kick (tornado kick), a kick then fall to the floor (mid kick), roll to the left, right, then backwards finishing with a left handed cartwheel. Easy enough, right? Well maybe for you, but certainly not for me! In theory these things are easy to do, but in application I was getting my butt handed to me. Oh not to mention that after doing it three times I started to get overheated and winded. After I'd had it reviewed a few times, I went to practice it on my own and managed to hurt myself while trying to do the backward roll. Up until the time I hurt myself I was doing more of a sideways wobble backwards. So I decide to go for it and push off the ground to get the backward roll and hear *crunch crunch CRUNCH crack* and instantly my neck was angry.

That obviously wasn't good, so I decided to go back to the beginning of the form to take a "breather" and practice other parts of the form to rest a bit before the cardio crazy portion of the form. I get a few moves into my form and I start to get dizzy. So I take a minute to stretch out and focus on my breathing when I start to feel the blood rush away from my face. My instructor noticed that I wasn't doing well and told me to sit down. I was so mad at myself, but I knew I had to sit down. After what seemed like an eternity, I was able to stand up again and request to be able to join the class without anymore problems.

So, yesterday I was reminded that I have my first 5K (Warrior Dash) coming up at the end of September. That's only 29 days away!! Despite my little snafu at Fu, I decided to hop back on the C25K program, right where I left off at W2D3. My run was FANTASTIC! I felt great, barely got winded, and had little muscle soreness afterwards or even during the run. Even today I'm feeling pretty good, other than my knee that's started to become angry again. So, here are my updated stats!

Week 1
W1D1: Not recorded (didn't use app yet)
W1D2: 1.51 miles at 19:54 min/mile
W1D3: 1.62 miles at 18:30 min/mile

Week 2
W2D1: 1.36 miles at 22:50 min/mile
W2D2: 1.69 miles at 18:21 min/mile
W2D3: 2.17 miles at 14:16 mile

Woo hoo! I blew my own record out of the water. I know it's not how fast you go or how far, but I'm really proud of what I did. Hooray! Now I'm looking forward to starting Week 3 on Saturday. Wish me luck!

Sorry to hear about your neck. Is it better now?

Way to go at getting back into things. Kung Fu sounds super hard, but you sound like you are doing great! Also, congrats on the new PR for running. That's great! You are making excellent progress! emoticon
