Laughter and Joy

Thursday, August 30, 2012

I attended the Ambassador Wellness Luncheon yesterday and we were treated to a presentation by Dee Aguilar, Ph.D., Coordinator of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
Her topic was ‘Laughter’ and while I’ve long known about the benefits of laughing, she gave me some new tools and insights.

She started with an exercise:
• We repeated ho-ho-ha-ha-ha
• We then repeated the phrase with emphasis on the ‘h’
• We then repeated the phrase with emphasis on the ‘h and added a clap for each word
• We then repeated the phrase with emphasis on the ‘h and added a clap for each word and added a smile
• And finally we repeated the phrase with emphasis on the ‘h and added a clap for each word and added a smile as we looked @ others

It was a great way to ‘break the ice’ and get our minds and bodies engaged (and crossing the brain midline changes our attitude)

Dee was a wealth of information:
Children laugh an average of 400 times/day, while adults laugh only 20
100 laughs emoticon = 10 minutes of rowing emoticon
10 minutes of laughter emoticon = 2 hours of sleep emoticon

She had great ideas to bring laughter into our lives:
1. On a personal level - Conduct a laughter assessment - contemplate what, when, where and with whom you laugh
2. On an occupational level
– conduct a laugh challenge @ work
– make an office humor bag complete with handmade rubber band balls, deck of cards, yo-yos and passing the ‘goodies’ out @ lunch or @ our breaks
- start a laughter club
3. On a social level - make a laughter basket for someone who’s ill – fill it with funny movies, quotes, popcorn

And finally Dee presented ‘Six Super Solutions’ to work more joy into our lives
Monday – compliment others
Tuesday – be flexible in our lives
Wednesday – be grateful
Thursday – be kind to ourselves and others
Friday – forgive
Weekend – chocolate -treat yourself and others (or indulge in chocolate – it is a food group you know)

She suggested some wonderful web resources

More resources as we become "AWAKE! ALIVE! AWARE! and Appreciative of ALL that IS".

That is the first time I have heard of a seminar like that. Very interesting on the times per day that children and adults laugh, next time I will count. emoticon

I'd love to attend a seminar like this! Reminds me of the Chopra laughter meditation (Spring challenge?) in which I went from laughing to crying in a heartbeat. What a powerful way to release emotion.
