Day 6: Sweaty, Shaky Yoga
Monday, August 27, 2012
It has been at least four years since I have had a regular workout routine, let alone anything I could call a yoga "practice." Prior to this long hiatus, though, I used to teach basic Hatha yoga. Now I am so out of shape my "downward-facing dog" looks more like on of those lawn cutouts of an old lady's backside! Not to mention the fact that my memory after two rounds of chemo is about the same as a goldfish's.
I have a friend who offered me a free one-on-one class when I was undergoing treatment, but I never felt well enough during that process to take the initiative and try it out. I contacted her recently to see if she would be willing to honor that certificate even though it was a couple of years old and she said she was glad to!
My session with her was today, and she had me sweating through re-trying old postures with shaking, uncertain muscles. We went for an hour and a half, and it was intense. I don't feel like I actually achieved any big breakthroughs in terms of rediscovering flexibility or strength, but my body felt pretty good afterward and I was proud of myself for trying.
I wish I could afford to take lessons (from her or at a school) regularly, but in the meantime I will try to practice on my own and/or with some old dvds. I hope to be able to regain some of my old confidence in this wonderful mind/body form. I am grateful for the generosity and patience of my teacher, and everyone else who is supporting me on this journey.
