Facing the old enemy with a new weapon!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Monday, August 27, 2012

We had out-of-town company this weekend. As most people do when entertaining we had special foods and some meals out at nice restaurants. While I did better than I would have in the OLD days (didn't order dessert, had dressing on the side, drank water as my beverage) I still FAILED and the scales showed a 2 pound gain this morning!

I've been facing this enemy for 3 decades. I'm sure you have encountered the "army of obesity". They have BIG weapons and sneaky tactics. Let me list them for you so you know what YOU are up against when you face them.

THE BIG GUNS:

Free food
Restaurant Sized Portions
BOGO and coupons
Celebrations and Parties
Expense Account Meals

COVERT OPERATIONS:

TV and Print Advertising
Distraction and Redirection
Time limitations

PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

Negative Self-Talk
Reminders of your Past Failures
Procrastination

SMALL WEAPONS:

Broken or lost food scales
Spoiled healthy food

OPPORTUNISTIC WEAPONS:

Weather (rain/snow/extreme heat)
Broken equipment
Closed gym
Bruises, Cuts, Scrapes, and Soreness

THIS IS A FORMIDABLE ENEMY! I have lost countless battles to this army but I have NOT lost the war! I have a NEW set of weapons and they are EFFECTIVE!

I got up this morning and "armed" myself for battle.

1. I got on the scales and faced the "size of the army".
2. I had a healthy breakfast with lean protein and fruits.
3. I pushed back against the enemy by getting on the elliptical early.
4. I wrote out a food plan for the day, Every victorious battle begins with a plan.
5. I have accountability at SP. This adds many soldiers to my side.
6. I have endurance. I will keep fighting until the war is won!
7. I enlisted additional soldiers (joined a SP challenge).
8. I cleared the obstacles from my line of sight so I can see the enemy better. (Tossed the leftovers from the weekend including that 1/2 gallon of premium ice cream.)
9. I made an ACTIVE "to do" list for the week which includes planned fitness minutes and activities to keep me off my computer chair.
10. I filled my 20 ounce water bottle first thing and will keep the water going all day.

This enemy may be a tough one but not impossible to beat. I just can't let my guard down for 3 days. Take a lesson from me and keep your weapons handy and FIGHT. It's worth it!

March on!

WOW!! Only 2 lbs. that's great. If you drank a lot of water it was most likely water gain. I look at food and I gain that.. GOOD GOING emoticon

Great blog. A 2 pound gain when you have lots of outside company to entertain is not really that bad. Getting right back on the wagon is a great thing and will work. Have a great day

The blog is a weapon, too! You can fight this! We are not perfect and will not eat perfectly all the time. A weekend of eating out of the norm will not make one obese. Reflect on family time and the wise choices youDID make and move forward. Don't "own" those two pounds just yet. When you own them they stick. Just like when you lose 2. They are not yours until they are gone for a while.

I love how you faced the enemy! The truth is, we just have to make the steps to combat the enemy each day, but making moment by moment decisions! I've decided I'm going to live with a payment system. I take away calories with not the best foods, then I have to pay my body back with 2 or 3 miles of aerobic walking. It helps with my actual monetary budget too :)

I suppose everyone has a day or night like this, we slip into old eating habits. Usually too large of portions. Of course a weight gain will not show up over night. A water gain will with too much sodium.
But as you progress on your new way of eating, the times out or the special occasions are not any different than the other days.
After a while your new lifestyle, eating all food, in moderate portions becomes second nature.
One year of maintenance and I eat the same. Out to dinner, at a wedding, on vacation as I do every others day. I might have a drink, an desert but it's accounted for in my daily consumptions of calories.
When I lost weight it was not a diet that started and ended. So I could resume eating as I used too. No it was a lifetime change of how I look and approach food.
Do I ever gain a lb or 2, yes, but thats all. I have a range and I stay within it.
You can do it, just practice eating the same way, use portion control everyday of the year. And if you go a little over, makeup for it during the rest of the week. One meal or even a day doesn't undo what a week of healthy eating.
