So, finally, this morning I feel normal again...at least for the moment. I was plagued most of last week with an atrocious migraine. I get those sometimes, and I call them "extended stay migraines." Basically, I have a dull headache 24/7, and at some point in the day, the pain becomes unbearable. Last week, it just happened to be around 1:00 each afternoon when the pain would kick into high gear. It was so bad, that Saturday, I had blurred vision most of the afternoon. The bad thing is, I have prescription pills to take, but they have a huge amount of caffeine in each pill and sometimes it takes up to 4 of them to knock the edge off! Therefore, I can't sleep at night, and the vicious cycle continues. So, last week, I didn't spark too much, but I did track my nutrition most of the days. I think I'm back now; took a vitamin B2 and so I'm hoping that I won't again experience the 1:00 migraine blues again!
All that being said, I'm sorry for being more absent last week, but hope to be back on track. The main reason I wanted to write this morning was to share my wonderful experience this morning on the way to work. For months now, I have at least attempted to ride my bike to work 1-2 times per week. It's a grand total of 4.36 mi to and from, which doesn't seem like much, but the way I see it is, hey, it's some kind of workout if I get the chance to do nothing else for the day! I LOVE riding to work, particularly in the mornings because it is generally peaceful and a little cooler. What I didn't bargain for this morning was the enormous amounts of back-to-school traffic! We have two universities where I live, one at which I am employed, so traffic abounds!
What I didn't expect was the response I would receive from oncoming traffic. I live right on the corner of the busiest street in town, near the busiest intersection in town at the busiest freeway in town! So, I have to take residential roads 4 blocks north in order to get to an easier intersection. However, there is not a traffic light at this particular junction, only a stop sign and the traffic gets REALLY backed up at this certain area. So, I patiently awaited as cars whizzed by for what seemed like 30 minutes! Suddenly, all the traffic in the lane closest to me just comes to a stop and I see a woman who has stopped all the traffic behind her just for me! I look at her pleadingly though, trying to portray, "As wonderful as I think you are right now, there are still 5 other lanes of traffic to think about and a turning lane! AAAHHH!!!" So, she read my emotions, continued to hold up traffic, gave me her pointer finger as if to say, "hold on just one minute," watched the other two lanes of oncoming traffic and gave me the signal as to when it was safe to go! WOW!!! I smiled as I sped across traffic and wished so much I could have thanked her from the bottom of my heart.
As I continued on, I got to the freeway and I ALWAYS use the press button for pedestrians at this point because the traffic just goes way too fast. As I approached, I noticed an oncoming cyclist; before I had time to process whether to stop or not, the gentleman kindly stopped and let me cross first. Just seconds later, I got to another crosswalk, and another young man who had just crossed the street on foot, pressed the button for me before I got there, so I wouldn't have to wait as long. By this point, I was beaming with joy that so many had treated me so nicely! As I prepared to cross another street, a nice elderly man in traffic smiled and waved at me as though he was so glad to see me. As I made my way into the residential traffic again, coming nearer to the university, another lady at a four way stop stayed at her stop sign, smiled and waved at me to go first. And then, right as I was turning onto the last street heading up to work, another gentleman who appeared to be more of the business-type, smiled and waved!
I thanked God for the blessing of encountering so many nice people. I was so overcome with the joy of this experience, I forgot I was even getting a work out and my legs were burning by the time I hopped off and parked it! Where I live, people are pretty nice overall, but they do tend to get busy and forget the little things. Not this morning though! I don't know if everyone was in particularly good spirits over the new school year or if the Lord just wanted me to see an awesome display of kindness to start my week off in a very positive light. It was a blessing though and gave me the best attitude possible to get the week going!
It is my hope that each of you will experience a wonderful Monday blessing too, and that your entire week will be filled with joy!
