Triathlon Training Camp 8-25-12 & 8-26-12 in Hannibal, MO and Quincy, IL
SATURDAY DAY 1

My Triathlon Training Camp started Saturday at with a 10K race. The Mississippi River Run in Hannibal , MO. I was hoping to set a new 10K PR in this race but I missed it by 6 seconds.
I did take 1:30 off my time when I ran this race in 2009. So, I did live up to my motto: "Older, Lighter, Faster." My time was 52:51 an 8:31 pace. I got a medal as the second masters female and was 23rd overall. I pushed myself hard and really did give it all I had especially when my husband starting cheering me in on the last mile. I was not sure if I wanted to wear my Garmin on the course after a discussion with a friend who thinks she can run faster if she does not. I decided on a compromise, I would wear it but set the virtual training partner for the time I wanted and try for only look at it at mile markers. My pace was set for 8:10 which was too fast for this course so I was behind after the second mile. From mile 2 on I just went with pushing my body as hard as I could. In the end, I am happy with this and will seek a 10K PR which I am confident I am capable of on a flatter course!
After the race there was a bike ride planned to begin at 10 AM. This ride could be up to 75 miles. As an out and back course, folks were free to turnaround any time. This is where my focus on running my hardest rather than pacing myself for the weekend came back to haunt me. I will always be a runner at heart using or saving my best for my beloved sport. Anyway, this bike ride was very difficult and very hilly. I started out on the first 5 miles feeling okay other than pain in my back and neck. After about 5 miles and nearly continual hill climbing things started to fall apart for me. I felt really hungry so I thought maybe I was in need of fuel. I had a 200 calorie breakfast before the race and an orange after the race. Duh, not enough calories for sure. I decided to stop and eat a banana and have some water (good grief only 5 miles into the ride and I have having issues!) After this things got worse instead of better because nausea set in full force and the pain in my back and neck was a stabbing pain by this point so I also took some Advil. Well, by mile 10 knowing it was an out and back ride and the further I headed out the longer I had to ride back in I decided to turn around. Very good decision! This course was so hard that there were Iron Man Finishers out on the course that had to sag back in! My wonderful husband was riding with me on the ride me and offering encouragement all the way. I donít know how I would do any of this without him!
Now it was time to go back from Hannibal. MO to Quincy, IL get cleaned up, and head to Tiramisu Italian restaurant. where we had a group dinner that evening. Here is a photo of those who survived so far!
Dinner was delicious and then it was off to the swimming club to work on drills and technique from 8-9 PM. Whew what a day I was ready for bed and was even wondering if I would even get up and go again on Sunday!
SUNDAY DAY 2
Sunday morning 8 AM was time to t swim some more. It was a large 50 meter pool and to simulate open water swimming we had to swim in a large rectangle counter clockwise around 4 buoys that were positioned at four corners of the pool. Also we all started at once we could deal with the typical jostling and bumping at the start of an open water swim. After that it was time for a rest while we listened to a lecture of improving transition time. Finally, the grand finale was another 10K run. I was one of the slowest swimmers but now I was in my element and finished fairly close to the fastest runners. Here is a photo after the final run. This is me in the middle with our coach for the weekend, Joe Company on the right and on the left local triathlete Carrie Kimber, who just raced in long course in worlds a couple weeks ago. She is the person that organized the weekend Joe who is her coach.
It was quite a weekend! Letís just say I am ready for a break! But then again, my running club does have hill repeats tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM...
