The Coast Less Travelled

Saturday, August 25, 2012

Well, ladies and gents, I am happy to stop in to let you know I'm still around... seems like forever since the last post, and in fact, in digital terms, it has been. As I've offered several times, if you'd like to keep in closer touch with me, send me a DM and get with me on Facebook. Where before, I was lacking the motivation to do much blogging, I will soon lack the time.

Yes, Virginia, it's true, this kid's going back to work! Starting on August 28th, I will join the ranks of those supporting our military personnel overseas by performing important functions such as, um, cashier. Well, I wanted part-time, so this shoe fits perfectly! emoticon

Why, you may ask, would I voluntarily give up the life of luxury that has cradled me securely in my beautiful suburban home for the past two years? There can only one answer, and it's got lots to do with the fab background of my SparkPage! Vyv's headed for Oz!

After saying I would NEVER work in retail again, I'm now working in retail again in order to go to the one place in Australia I once claimed I would NEVER want to waste air fare to get to: picturesque Perth, located on the coast of sandy Western Australia. I guess the old adage goes "once a West Coast girl, always a West Coast girl", though I thought that only applied to California... emoticon Barring any odd occurrences between now and then, April 2013 should see me arguing with tanned people sporting flipflops and odd accents while trying to figure out why breakfast in Australia is twice as expensive as any posh place in the States.

Speaking of odd occurrences, I recently found my very first passport from the days when the German passport was a giant, green monster. It contained my very first Australian visa (for a trip that never happened, alas) with a date of issue of 18 April 1989. I smiled, put it back in the drawer and thought no more of it until I happened onto my (expired) US passport which actually did go to Australia with me. The immigration stamp from Sydney airport was dated 18 April 2006. And here comes the kicker: my planned departure date for next year is April 17, which gets me to Perth on -you guessed it- the 18th! Teehee! emoticon

Alrighty... on the fitness front... I've been horribly slacking with the running since Frankfurt, but I hope to return to former glory once the weather gets out of these ridiculous temperatures. Unlike most of my countrymen, I do not revel in absurd hotness, even if it is August. Meanwhile, I'm going through a second round of ChaLean Extreme and having a great time. I've also been meditating again whenever I can fit in a few minutes, which always seems to give my creativity a much-needed boost.

I think that pretty much exhausts the interesting news for today. Hope you're all well!

That's really weird about the dates. Very glad to see life is moving along in the direction you want it to. Isn't it strange how the things we want or don't want at one stage in life are completely the opposite at another time? You'll be tanned and wearing flip flops before you know it (and calling them thongs of course)!

Excellent!! Hmmm...once a west coast girl, always a west coast girl...does that mean I'll be moving to Australia's west coast, too ;-)

I almost made it to New Zealand once; Australia has been on my "maybe one day far in the future probably never happen but nice to think about" travel lists. Welcome back!

I liked visiting Perth, along with Cairns - I remember tomatoes, Japanese food and the ever popular Vegemite offered at every meal in Australia, including breakfast. Enjoy!
