Do You Have The Right Mindset For Losing Weight?

Friday, August 24, 2012

Losing weight is more than just watching the food you eat and the amount of exercise you do. One of the most important (and hardest) steps in the weight loss journey is putting yourself in the right frame of mind to commit yourself 100% to your weight-loss plan.

If you have ever tried to lose weight in the past you will already know how easy it is to become distracted along the way. It can feel like a constant battle to stay focused and stick to your weight-loss plan all of the time.

Sticking to a diet and exercise plan is tough because everyday you are surrounded by temptations that can lead you off course. You have to deal with the unhealthy food cravings which can be extremely hard to ignore and you have to cope with making drastic changes to your daily routine so you can break those bad habits which keep causing you to put on weight.

And if that wasn’t hard enough you also have to deal with the pressures and personal commitments of everyday life such as work, family and maintaining a healthy social life. This can almost start to feel like a real juggling act as you try to find the right balance between sticking to your weight-loss plan and living a normal life.

It’s no wonder that many people fail or give up on their weight-loss goals because it can feel like everything is working against you. This is why you need to have the right mindset when you start your weight-loss journey so you can overcome these obstacles and stay on the right track to losing weight.

How To Develop The Right Mindset To Lose Weight

To be successful with any weight-loss plan you need to be committed and commitment is purely a state of mind. To have commitment you need to be determined, motivated, positive and have the will power to overcome obstacles and resist all temptations.

Below are 6 important steps you can take that will help you create the right mindset for losing weight.

1. What Do You Truly Want For Yourself – Why do you really want to lose weight? What are the reasons? Is it for health reasons? Is it because you want to improve your physical appearance so you can feel good about yourself? It could be for a variety of different reasons but the important thing to determine here is why do YOU want to lose weight.

Determining the reasons why YOU want to lose weight is going to be the driving force and motivation you will need to be committed and stick to your weight-loss plan until you get the results you are after.

2. Set Specific Weight-loss Goals For Yourself – Set some goals for yourself so you have a destination to work towards. Try and be specific when you set these goals so you know exactly what you want to achieve. Is it to lose 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 40 pounds, 50 pounds?

By setting specific weight-loss goals you will be able to see exactly how far you have come in your journey and how far you still need to go.

3. Make Your Plan - Once you have set your goals and you have a final destination that you can work towards, you then need to make a plan of how you will get there. Analyze your current situation and identify the necessary changes and the course of action you will need to take in order for you to reach your goal.

Give yourself the best chance of sticking to your plan by making it enjoyable for yourself. Plan a diet for yourself that is not only healthy but is also full of foods that you will enjoy eating. Develop a fitness program for yourself that will help you lose weight but make it consist of activities you actually enjoy doing.

4. Prepare Yourself For Change – You need to prepare yourself for the changes in your life that are about to happen. You need to make yourself fully aware that sticking to your plan is going to require some hard work both physically and mentally.

You will increase your chances of being successful with your weight-loss plan if you realize the amount of effort that is going to be required before you actually start the journey. By doing this you are less likely to give up when the going gets tough because you have already prepared yourself for what is about to happen.

5. Practice Positive Thinking Techniques – It is easy to lose focus and give up when you have negative thoughts floating around in your head. When you start to doubt yourself and think you are not capable of achieving the goals you have set then there is a good chance you will not be able to stick to your plan and reach your final destination.

By using positive thinking techniques such as positive affirmations and vision boards you will keep yourself motivated and in high spirits. You will start to develop the mindset that anything is possible when you put in the effort and this will give you that positive attitude you need in order to achieve your weight-loss goals.

6. Realize That You Deserve Better - This is possibly the most important step in developing the right mindset that will help you lose weight. You need to realize that you deserve to be healthy and happy. Weight issues can lead to a variety of different health issues and can cause a major lack of self-esteem but you need to realize that you are capable of living the life you want.

Losing weight is not an easy task and it certainly will not happen overnight. But if you are able to get yourself into the right mindset for losing weight and mentally prepare yourself for the journey ahead then you are giving yourself the best possible chance to be successful.

I find that periodic reflection helps and promotes progress. I am not perfect and
striving for it is stressful. An overall plan is helpful and I use a "mind map" for that. More important for me is was i better this day, week or month than I was last time. Ice cream is a good example. I don't consider it a healthy food but it does help the journey if I have it occasionally. I may also be able to replace it with some things I enjoy as much or more.
