Last week we had a blast with our four kids when we took everyone for a two day trip to Legoland. For me, Legoland is kind of like a "lite" amusement park experience - not too crowded, not too hot and the rides aren't too overwhelming.
But still - going to an amusement park hasn't been on my "fun list" since before I was married. After all - you walk around all day, with your feet getting sore...you worry about fitting on the rides...you are squished in small little cars....and you are drenched on water rides and your t-shirt sticks to your fat.
Amusement parks are not the chubby woman's idea of a great time!
So I have resisted us going too often - easy enough to do since most parks are so expensive these days... we went to Disneyland about 6 years ago, went to Sea World about 4 years ago....but suddenly it was time. As my kids told me - Daniel (our youngest) has never been to any theme park other than Sea World. We adopted him when he was four and his behavior in previous years has made an amusement park a tough choice. But he is growing up fast and is changing into an almost self controlled young man of 9.
It was time....
So off to the land of legos we went, with me not too terribly excited - anticipating spending lots of money to have a rotten time.
Boy was I wrong!!! Got to the first little rollercoaster and I fit - easily - into the car and the bar pulled down easily to enclose both my son and I - we were in the front of the car - his first real ride. He absolutely loved it and his joy infused our whole family! We rode a second time - of course - and I remembered how much I loved going on rides when I was young!!
Next we did some rides that were kid-powered - one where you sit in a seat and together pull a rope that hauls you up - when you let go you plunge.... Middle daughter and I pulled ourselves up over and over...felt great to use my muscles...
We had packed a healthy lunch with lots of raw veggies and fruits, nuts and some other snacks as well as sandwiches. Not once did any of our kids ask for a churro - they were so happy to have constant baggies of healthy crunchies to munch while in line.
Midway through the afternoon we got in line for a water ride - which frankly should not have been called "Pirate Reef." "Pirate Drowning Ride" would have been a better and more honest name - a wall of water completely and thoroughly soaks you so that 4 hours later your undies are still wet...
In years past I never would have gone on this ride - but I was able to delight my kids by going and screaming with them and squishing through the park afterwards - trying to blow dry my hair in the bathroom with the hand dryers right along with my daughters....
And then - next up was the best part - a ride with a robotic arm that pitches you backwards and forwards and whips you from side to side while you are upside down... Fun - right?
My oldest daughter and I told the ride operator that we wanted level 5 on that ride - which is like saying "please, kind sir - give me a concussion..."
As soon as it started I yelled out, "I regret this..." which our younger kids heard from down below - they loved that!
At the end of the ride my oldest and I were laughing hysterically when she looked over at me and said, "hey mom - aren't you glad now that you lost all that weight? You wouldn't have fit on this ride 6 months ago... but now you're not big and fat anymore - now you're just mom-chunky.... you know - like a normal mom...."
I know that there is another theme park that bills itself as the happiest place on earth - but for that one day, for this one formerly big fat mom, Legoland was the happiest place on earth...
Oh - and my feet never hurt - and I didn't really get tired - loved all the walking!!!
