Tick-Bite Developments!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Two weeks post-tick-bite-disaster and my feet were still killing me. I couldnít wear socks and shoe, much less walk anywhere or do much of anything.

I was finally scared/guilted into going to the doctor my some nurses and pharmacists that I work with. They basically took one look at my feet and demanded that I go at once to see a medical professional with prescription-writing abilities. So, I did. Just to make sure I didnít have Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or any other debiliting disease AND to see if the doctors could do anything for the inflammation, itching, swelling, and burning that these tick bites have been causing me.

On Friday I saw a physicianís assistant (PA) who was a little surprised at the sheer number of bites on my feet (probably more than 100) and recommended that I start a preventative course of antibiotics immediately. I actually asked if I could start them AFTER the weekend and she discouraged that idea. She then gave me a steroid shot to calm the itching, burning, bite fest. Iím supposed to be on the look out over the next 2 or 3 weeks for any suspicious symptoms, but I think Iíll be fine.

I immediately left the doctorís office and drove about 2 hours to a BOARD GAME CONVENTION!! It was the smallest one I had been to, but it was still tons of fun. I made some awesome new friends and canít wait for the next one (probably in January).

Post-tick-bite and pre-doctor-visit my life has been pretty lazy. I havenít been able to do any kind of cardio because it just lights my feet on fire. So Iíve been a blob. Tonight I am going to try, for the first time in a LONG time, a 10-15 minute walk. With shoes. The steroids seem to have helped the swelling and pain and itching quite a bit, so I might be able to actually DO something again. Itís going to be really hard to get back into the swing of exercising after being forced to wait on the sidelines for so long.

Unfortunately the antibiotics that the doc gave me are kind of tearing up my insides. I got some probiotic yogurt yesterday, so hopefully that will help. On the plus side, even with a game convention where I definitely did not limit my caloric intake as well as I could have, Iím not up any weight! Iím pretty much exactly where I was when I left. And even though I havenít been able to exercise, Iíve mostly maintained my weight throughout the last two and a half weeks. Iím doing something right!

Itís very possible that in the next week I will see some gains, that seems to be how my body works, on some sort of time-delay, but thatís ok. Iím working on correcting my intakes and I should be able to get back some physical activity in the near future, so things are looking bright.

Have a great week friends!

Oh my goodness!! How on earth did you get so many tick bites?? That sounds HORRIBLE. I'm glad things are looking up though, between the steroids and the successful weight maintenance and all of that. Sorry about the stomach woes, though. :( But man, I'm going to have to catch up on some of your blogs to read up on this tick business. A hundred bites????

Okay, I checked out the blog explaining what happened...yikes!! Never heard of ticks like that.

The steroids can produce weight gain, so don't be disappointed if the scale does go up. I seem to have to take steroids for most everything that happens to me from poison ivy to asthma....it's all inflammatory reactions and steroids can work wonders to calm the inflammation.

Those seed ticks sound AWEFUL!!

Glad to hear you're finally getting some much needed relief! Sheesh, you must be miserable.
AND you maintained weight - even after the awesome-fun convention and not exercising. You are definitely doing something right! Keep it up!!

I'm very glad you saw someone with "prescription writing abilities" and have a handle on this! I cannot symphathize with you enough! I swear, I'm NEVER going outside between May and first frost. I currently have two chigger bites from spending 3 minutes in the garden. The one on my thigh SERIOUSLY is inflamed and raised and red THREE INCHES ACROSS. I measured. I just want to cut my leg off!
