Two weeks post-tick-bite-disaster and my feet were still killing me. I couldn’t wear socks and shoe, much less walk anywhere or do much of anything.
I was finally scared/guilted into going to the doctor my some nurses and pharmacists that I work with. They basically took one look at my feet and demanded that I go at once to see a medical professional with prescription-writing abilities. So, I did. Just to make sure I didn’t have Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or any other debiliting disease AND to see if the doctors could do anything for the inflammation, itching, swelling, and burning that these tick bites have been causing me.
On Friday I saw a physician’s assistant (PA) who was a little surprised at the sheer number of bites on my feet (probably more than 100) and recommended that I start a preventative course of antibiotics immediately. I actually asked if I could start them AFTER the weekend and she discouraged that idea. She then gave me a steroid shot to calm the itching, burning, bite fest. I’m supposed to be on the look out over the next 2 or 3 weeks for any suspicious symptoms, but I think I’ll be fine.
I immediately left the doctor’s office and drove about 2 hours to a BOARD GAME CONVENTION!! It was the smallest one I had been to, but it was still tons of fun. I made some awesome new friends and can’t wait for the next one (probably in January).
Post-tick-bite and pre-doctor-visit my life has been pretty lazy. I haven’t been able to do any kind of cardio because it just lights my feet on fire. So I’ve been a blob. Tonight I am going to try, for the first time in a LONG time, a 10-15 minute walk. With shoes. The steroids seem to have helped the swelling and pain and itching quite a bit, so I might be able to actually DO something again. It’s going to be really hard to get back into the swing of exercising after being forced to wait on the sidelines for so long.
Unfortunately the antibiotics that the doc gave me are kind of tearing up my insides. I got some probiotic yogurt yesterday, so hopefully that will help. On the plus side, even with a game convention where I definitely did not limit my caloric intake as well as I could have, I’m not up any weight! I’m pretty much exactly where I was when I left. And even though I haven’t been able to exercise, I’ve mostly maintained my weight throughout the last two and a half weeks. I’m doing something right!
It’s very possible that in the next week I will see some gains, that seems to be how my body works, on some sort of time-delay, but that’s ok. I’m working on correcting my intakes and I should be able to get back some physical activity in the near future, so things are looking bright.
