Exodus 26:31-33; Matthew 27:51
THE MESSAGE OF THE VEIL, Lesson 26b

V. 31-33 THE PURPOSE OF THE VEIL

It Served As A Warning - This veil was hung between the holy place, where the priests ministered everyday, and the Holy of Holies, where the presence of God dwelt above the Mercy Seat. It served as a barrier between holy God and sinful man.

They were told to prepare the veil with "cherubim" on it. The cherubim are angelic creatures that serve as the guardians of the holiness of God. They are first seen in Gen. 3:24, when they were positioned at the entrance of Eden to prevent man from gaining access to the tree of life.

The presence of the cherubim on the veil seem to serve the purpose of telling those who entered the Tabernacle that they could come this far and no farther! They were a constant reminder that access to God was forbidden. God is holy and man is a sinner. Therefore, the cherubim were placed there to warn all who approached the veil that to continue was to invite judgment and death! They reminded all that a holy God dwelled just behind the veil. What grace it was that God would warn men not to come into His presence in their sinful condition! The cherubim were there to warn man, but they also served to protect men and to preserve life.

It Served As A Wall - This veil served as a barrier between God and man. It shut man out of the presence of God, (Lev. 16:2), "And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat."

Between the sinner and God, there is a great wall standing, (Isa. 59:2). We cannot approach God within ourselves. To do so would invite judgment and death. Before man can enter into the presence of God, sin must first be dealt with.

It Served As A Way - While this veil served to keep men out, there was one day during the year when one man could enter. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest could enter into the Holy of Holies, but only with the blood of a sacrificial lamb, (Lev. 16:15), "Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:" On that day, the high priest was allowed to enter the side of the veil and minister in the Holy of Holies, sprinkling the blood of the sacrifice on the altar and atoning for the sins of the people. It was the only time any one was allowed behind the veil.

I just want to remind you that blood is the only way anyone has access into the presence of God, (Heb. 9:22; Heb. 10:19-20). Bloodless, Christ-less religion will never save the human soul! Those who try to get to God without the blood of Jesus will find themselves in Hell, because there is no other method God will accept. To enter into His presence, you must be born again,( John 3:3; 7). And, the only way to be born again is through the blood of the Lamb, (1 Pet. 1:18-19). Thank God, Jesus made the way for us to enter into the presence of God by going to the cross for our sins!

It Served As A Witness - While the high priest could only enter the Holy of Holies once each year, the priests ministered in the holy place every day of the year. As they did, they came within inches of the veil, but were never allowed to go past it. It was a constant reminder to them that they were sinners and that they were separated from God. It was constant reminder of man's moral failure.

So it is with the ministry of Jesus in the flesh. There are a lot of people who try to copy the life Jesus lived in an effort to secure their salvation. However, what men fail to realize is that the life of Christ cannot save! In fact, the life of Christ serves to condemn us all! He lived a perfect life and never once sinned against His Father or the Law. He did what you and I could never do: He lived a perfect life without sin! ( John 15:22). He is the "glory of God" that all of us have fallen short of, (Rom. 3:23)!

In the final analysis, the veil serves to remind man that he is a sinner in need of Savior and that he will never be able to approach God on his own merits.

TODAY’S HYMN!
“Safe In The Arms Of Jesus” By Fanny J. Crosby (1870)

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o'ershaded,
Sweetly my soul doth rest.
Hark! 'tis a song of heaven
Borne in the sweetest voice,
Echoed by saints in spirit,
Making my heart rejoice.
Refrain:
Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o'ershaded,
Sweetly my soul doth rest.

Safe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe from corroding care,
Safe from the world's temptations,
Sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow,
Free from my doubts and fears;
Only a few more trials,
Only a few more tears.
Refrain:

Jesus, my heart's dear Refuge,
Jesus has died for me;
Firm on the Rock of Ages
Ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait with patience,
Wait till the night is o'er,
Wait till I see the morning
Break on the golden shore.
Refrain:

THIS IS MY PRAYER!
Father Divine, Most Holy God! Help us to see the world around us with Your eyes. What do we see with our eyes? Despair, disappointment, violence, defeat, addiction, old age, death! Enable us not to see these things with our human eyes, but rather help us to see HOPE and LIFE in YOU through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Help us to see what appears dead is actually alive and giving life in new growth. Help us to live by the power of Your victory. These things we pray in the Blessed name of Jesus. Amen!

Since only the priests entered the tabernacle, the cherubim on the veil reminded them that even they were separated from the Holy of H0lies.
