Second fast day of the week

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

After Sunday's 'fast' of about 500 calories, I ate too much on Monday and felt bad about myself. The scale recorded an increase of 1.5 lb in one day - really depressing. So I did my second 'fast' day of the week today (Tuesday), totalling about 450 calories. I was hungry but not terribly so and it wasn't as hard to not eat as I'd expected.

After marshalling at Shipman's Knotts, I took a piece of flapjack and kept it in a bag ready for tomorrow. 'Fasting' (i.e. eating very few calories in a day) is much more achievable when I know I can eat normally tomorrow and when I can still eat two small meals during the day. Today I had cottage cheese and salad for lunch, a small apple as a snack at the fell race, some melba toast beforehand and tuna with onion, mushrooms, cabbage and courgette for dinner.

Tomorrow, though, I'm going to be careful not to over-indulge and undo all the good work. I reckon doing this for five weeks is just about possible, but will certainly be challenging.

    I gain well over 1kg whenever I'm pms/pmt ing.
A high salt intake (or sometimes even a restaurant visit) will show a short term weight gain too, it resolves itself fully in a day or two.

I can get obsessive about the scale, fortunately, I've weighed myself so many times that I'm starting to see trends and am pretty good at predicting whether for instance a weight gain is water weight or whether a weight loss is dehydration.

BBC horizon did a very interesting special on fasting. My husband is giving it a go too, he does not want to abstain from beer. I seem to be following a daily tracking/exercise programme with occassional cheat days.

We show "weight gains" for lots of reasons. Don't let the scale define you. I hope you find an eating plan that works for you, gives you the results you are looking for, and can be maintained long term.

If you are just doing this for five weeks, I can't imagine it can mess up your metabolism too much. Overall, going below 1200 calories per day makes it almost impossible to get all the macro-nutrients your body needs.

Good luck!

One of my colleagues is doing this fast too. I'm interested to see what results he gets from it.

cutting your calorie count that low is going to through your body into starvation mode which is not good for it. That weight increase is a sign that your body is trying to hang on to what calories are already store

I did HCG which has a 500 calorie a day limit but it is controlled by no dairy, 4 ozs of proteins and unlimited amounts of greens, a few veggies and fruits.
