Tonight is Pancake Night for supper, and for the last few months, I've been trying to find a tasty protein to go with it. I thought about chicken or turkey sausages, but I knew they'd take too long to cook for supper tonight.
I strolled down the veggie burger aisle, and found Yves Veggie Breakfast Patties. Nutritionals look good, no cholesterol (vegan food rarely does), and really low in fat & calories, although I wish the sodium content was just a bit lower.
Now, how to fool the Metatarian, who needs to cut down on cholesterol & saturated fats, into eating a soy patty.
I made the pancakes as I usually do, and lightly fried the veggie patties.
He looks at the fake meat still sizzling on his plate. "I thought you weren't buying pork anymore."
"It's not pork, sweetheart."
"Turkey??" Oh, he had such hope in his voice.
"No, honey bunny, it's fake meat. Just like the kind I put in the homemade spaghetti sauce I make, and you haven't died of starvation yet."
And since he really doesn't want to be on cholesterol-lowering meds, or any meds for that matter, he took a bite.
"Not bad for a soy patty." He takes a second bite. "Are you sure it has no meat in it? Because it tastes like pork. And it's actually pretty good."
Yves Veggie Cuisine, I love you. And I sure hope you carry your products at Costco, because they're expensive at the regular grocery store, and I will DEFINITELY buy a case of them!
