Responsibility

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

I have run into some family issues that have me questioning what is happening with many young people these days. I know I taught my children about taking responsibility for life choices.
We all make some choices that we need to change, some that are impossible to change. No matter which one it is we need to accept our responsibility in those choices. We need to learn from that bad ones and also from the positive ones.
I am noticing that many young people blame their parents for the choices that the young person has made, but I feel that you can only guide your children, you can't speak for them. You can not force them to take responsibility, you can guide them in good choices, sent positive examples.
I am struggling with family and responsibility that some refuse to take. I need to back off, to remind them that I love them, but I can not, will not live for them because then I can't live for myself at all.

You are so right, Bonnie. It is always difficult to step back and let people you love live with the consequences of their actions. I am struggling with that now, but I think my DH and I have crossed the line from helping to enabling and that has to stop.

It's a painful truth. Thanks for opening up about it. There are consequences to one's choices.

It is hard to tell our children or other family members that they have to live with the actions good or bad. My sons made some bad choices as your teenagers and have come out the other end a better person and truly learned from the wrong actions. emoticon emoticon

Sometimes that's the hardest thing to do.
