Today I went on a really awesome hike close by my house (I'm spoiled to live in a city that has a plethora of awesome hiking trails and parks) and alternated running and walking. It was awesome, and I could feel muscles working that I wouldn't have used if I had just been running on the track. Instead of being bored by the same scenery again and again, my workout was livened up by all sorts of outdoorsy scenes. I am constantly reminded of how much I can do, and how hard I can work, without ever needing to go to a gym! I'd like to get a gym membership but right now I'm using the things that I have available to me; water bottle weights, online exercise videos, my jump rope, and running shoes.
I have some concerns about vacation, and my goals. I first decided to lose weight so that this year on my vacation, in October, I wouldn't feel as self-conscious when donning a bathing suit and splashing around in the water. I wanted my health to improve so that I could get permission from my doctor to go scuba diving (there's no yes or no on that quite yet....)
My fear, or concerns, is that my goals are not long-term enough that I will work to sustain my consistently improving health and weight loss. I've read that goals need to be specific, and attainable...but after my vacation, I'm not sure what I want. Obviously I want to continue bettering my health, but how do I keep focused? What kind of goals should I set? I want to run a half marathon next year, but I know that will not keep me motivated enough because it seems so far away, and like such a daunting task.
I need some goal ideas to keep myself working hard! I'm loving how I am feeling lately, but fall will soon be upon me, and the weather will not be as great either. So....any suggestions?
