monday morning

Monday, August 20, 2012

Well it is monday again. Today I finally have the doctor's appointment, so I can get my ankle checked out! I am planing on working out after that. I don't know exactly what I want to do to work out, but I want to go to the koltche center (I'm not sure how it is spelled). That is a fitness center on campus that is free to use durring the semester, and I think that it is free as of today, but I am not sure. I will check it out and see. I plan on canceling my membership to planet fitness later then, if I can go to the klotche center, there is no point of having two gym memberships.

I hope I can get a new bus pass today, as my old one expired on the 19th. They never know when the new ones are in. At UWM they give away free (its included in our tuition) bus passes called a upass. I don't have a car so I rely on the bus for transportation. I had signed up for a summer class and got the pass for the summer, but I couldn't afford to take the class so I had to drop it. I kept the bus pass and used it though.

Oh I know what I will write about here! I don't think that I have written about this here before. I am trying to start my own jewelry making business. I have been making jewelry as a hobby for years and would like to be able to make money selling what I make. I have been taking the slow route in starting my business because I would like to do it right. The name of my business is "Crafts by Knight" originally I was going to call my business "Carley Knight Crafts," but I like my new name a whole lot better. I need to register my name somehow, but as of right now I don't have much money.

I got into an art fair recently! It will be on september 22nd at downtown Milwaukee on the riverwalk. It a the first anual event and there is no entry fee. I need to steep up my production as I want to sell as much as I can. I don't know exactly how much stuff to bring, but I a super excited. I will use this as an opportunity to see who my clients are. I don't really have a customer profile to market to yet, and I hear that it is good to target a specific type of customer if you want to sell.

Here are some links if you want to check out my business:

my face book page:

my etsy store:

and my twitter handle is: @craftsbyknight

I haven't really done much with my etsy site or my twitter page. It takes a lot of time to do etsy, and I need to take good pictures and edit them. I sound like I am making excuses don't I? I need to make a schedule and figure out how much time I have exactly to give to my business before school starts. I will write more about school later. I have bought books about starting a crafting business, and I have also checked some out of the library too. I need to read the books and take notes. I need to make a business plan and figure out how much to charge for my jewelry. There is a lot that goes into a business and I want to make sure that I get it right the first time.

In one of the books it was suggested that I make a blog, which I am planning on doing. It will take a lot of time and energy to write another blog, but I am enjoying writing this blog and having people read and respond to what I write that I just might do it. I reserved a blog on blogger called but I have yet to make the first entry.

Have you checked out Pinterest yet? That would definitely lend itself well to your jewelry-making business since it is a visually-based social media platform.

You are right about blogging. It is a huge undertaking and not always the biggest bang for the buck if you don't have time or the resources to put into it (just getting a blog professionally designed can be pricey!)

    Good luck with it!

Sounds like you have a lot to do! Yeah, lists have always helped me... even rough drafts.. figure out what you need to do first then go on from that, take it one step at a time, don't look at the big picture all the time otherwise it may get discouraging. But You do need to look at the big picture every once in a while! Sounds like you have a good plan though! You can definitely do it!!

I just looked at your sites and you are doing great!!! Wow! Beautiful jewelry! You definitely have a talent girl!!

You have a lot to do, a lot to learn, and a lot to figure out. Make a list of all the things you need to get done, when they must be done by (if there's a due date) and prioritize. For your business, look around online to find blogs or websites by people who make items similar to yours and see what they have. If you're enjoying their site, try emailing them and asking them a few questions, like "how did you decide what to charge" and "have you ever done a craft show; how many pieces did you take?" That could be a way to get some of your questions answered without slogging through a bunch of books (still read through some books eventually, but this will give you a head start). If you can find someone who will be at the same show as you, maybe you can make a friend there, which will help you share the experience with someone who's been there also. As for registering the trademark (or whatever it's called), do a search online. I'm sure someone has explained the process so you can get that done quickly. You want to be sure that no one else has already claimed that phrase, because if they have then using it online or at a craft show could get you a lawsuit or worse.
