A 60 mile bike ride.

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Had a lovely day today. I woke up at 6:15am and got ready for my 48 mile bike ride.

I had a spoonful of olive oil and packed 3 drinks in my small ruck sack. The drinks were made form 2 tablets called Zero - to help replace electrolytes which you lose in your sweat.

I then ate 2 small waffles before I left the house.

I biked 3 miles to my friends house. The morning was quite and cool, but not cold. From there we had another 3 mile journey to meet another couple of ladies who were joining us.

Then we biked 46 miles together, stopping for a drink every now and then (the day was blistering hot). We also stopped for a cake - I opted for an apple and cinnamon one and didn't really like it. The old me would have loved it but the new me wasn't happy to be eating it. However, not having much for breakfast I knew I needed some carbohydrates in my body.

I couldn't drink enough on my journey. I felt constantly dehydrated and even when I came home I was drinking loads but it was another 4 hours before I went to the toilet. Strange.

The pace of the bike ride increased and I could feel myself falling further behind until the three ladies were a spec in the distance but I was determined I could stay with them and eventually caught them up. My legs got tired at one point but increased in energy later. We did an average pace of 14 minute miles and then increased it to 15-16 minute miles. WE were storming, big time.

Here is a photo of me changing a bike tyre. My tyre had slashed on my metal I couldn't avoid. Luckily, I had an inner tube with me and one of the ladies helped me to fix it. I was so chuffed we could do it. Girl Power. However, pumping the tyre was hard work and one of my friends phoned her boyfriend to help us pump it. We only had about 8 miles to go at this point.

BUT the best thing is. I was so tired after biking 50 miles I usually sleep when I get back but today, despite biking the furthest I have ever been, I have washed up the dishes, cooked tea and I am still going strong. No sign of tiredness as yet and the time is almost 9pm!

You continue to amaze me, Helen. And just think *you* actually biked 12 more miles than those other ladies, when you add in both your getting there AND coming back home! YOU, my dear, are the winner, in that race!! emoticon

**Time for a helpful tip, though....

From now on, make sure you pack up plenty of fuel type foods in your bag and not just the liquids. If you bring your own Protein/Carb bars (as an example) then you will NOT HAVE TO just eat the *cake* that is available (which offers ZERO nutritional value) and your body will have the, much needed energy, it needs to make those kind of long journeys. The bars weigh next to nothing, too.

I never leave my house without plenty of healthy food items in my bag. I never allow myself to be caught off guard and hungry. Plus, eating every 2-3 hrs, doesn't leave much time between meals, so I gotta have stuff on hand.

Anyway, I'm VERY proud of you!! YOU are an inspiration, to ME! emoticon
