My Fun Fun Run and some reasons for it

Hi Again All --
Today I ran in a local 5-K fun run. It's become an annual ritual to mark th end of summer and the start of the school year. The weather was perfect, sunny and still cool at 7:30 a.m. I ran hard while keeping a controlled pace and clocked a 23:08. This is only five seconds slower than six years ago and 19 seconds slower than in 2007, my previous fastest times. It was also good enough to win my age group (men 50-59)! I won a nice water bottle. Cool.

I'm 51 now so I feel pretty good about actually regaining time compared to the past few years. I'll credit several things: a switch to minimalist running (more fluid form), and our family's switch to a wheat-free and gluten-free, primal-style diet a la Mark Sisson. Plus a better training method of longer, slower runs to train my body to burn fat for fuel instead of glycogen, of which there can only be limited stores.

I'm very grateful for health and fitness, which puts the fun back into the fun runs. I'm going to research a low-carb diet next, as my wife and daughter (a competitive HS swimmer) have done so and are sharing good results with me. emoticon

Good to get the "fun' back into your "fun runs."

Great results - so good to hear diet and the changes in your training regimen are working for you. I know I have way more endurance since converting to a primal-style lifestyle.
