My week off chemo

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Sometimes, my weeks off from chemo are rougher than the weeks on. This was one of those weeks.

Monday I had a sinus headache and nausea most of the day. Late in the afternoon, it turned into a migraine. I took my migraine meds around 5pm and went to bed at 6:30pm. Thursday I had another bad headache. This time I took my Fiorcet to head off a migraine, but it made me sleepy all day, and I had nausea most of the day despite taking my nausea meds too. I spent most of that day vegged out in my recliner, either dozing, watching tv, or reading.

The fatigue has been an issue all week; I suspect my blood counts are down from having two chemos in a row. Being fatigued makes the pain issues worse too, especially in my left hip and knee. I'm using my TENS unit more often, and it helps a little bit, but only while it is on. I can't use it all day though; at the pain clinic they told me no more than 4 hours per day, an hour at a time, with at least a half hour break from it between each hour. Still, 4 hours of relief are better than none. I'm trying to stay on top of the pain by taking my pain pills on time, but they add to my fatigue too.

The week hasn't been all bad though; Tuesday my nephew came over and mowed the lawn. Now that we are finally getting the rain we should, my grass is thicker now than it has been all summer.

Wednesday I had lunch out with my mom and 3 friends. We went to Vivo's, a local Italian place. It was a beautiful day, and not too hot, so we sat in their outdoor seating area.

Friday I felt well enough to get caught up on my laundry, that was probably my best day of the week. I also got my order of yarn that day. I started on my afghan last night and it's going well. It's going to take me a long time to get it finished, but that's ok, I'm in no hurry. I wanted a project that would keep me busy for awhile. Looking forward to working on it some more tonight.

I get such strength for my own challenges from reading about the way you cope with really difficult forms of health-challenge related adversity, Shari. You are really magnificent and teach us so very much... And the way you seek happiness and enjoyment in life is a great lesson for us all! Glad you enjoyed that wonderful Italian, good!! emoticon

It definitely sounds like a rough week. I hope next week is better. Maybe if they can give you another transfusion it will be helpful.

It sounds like you have something to look forward to with the afghan. I used to love to crochet in the winter in front of the fireplace. I have not been able to do it for quite a while due to the arthritis in my hands. I hope that you feel better soon. Fatigue is hard to deal with at times. emoticon and emoticon emoticon
