Ready for a Change-A Bit Whiny.....

Did you know that 18 weeks of training for a 50 mile walk is a LONGGGGGGGG time????? I've been doing this training now for about 14-15 weeks and I'm ready to get this walk over with and get the variety back into my workouts! I haven't made it to Tae Kwon Do for a long time and when I did make it, it was only for a couple of classes. I really wanted to test in September (the week after my walk) for my next level of black belt but with the walking 4-5 days a week and three kids in stuff it just hasn't happened. And I'm getting annoyed.

I LOVE my TKD classes and miss my dozens of DVD workout videos that give me so much variety. I miss strength training but walking a minimum of 4 miles and now getting up to 5 and 6 miles in a week along with up to 18-20 miles on a weekend day, it takes SOOOOO much time!

I am totally committed to this walk - don't get me wrong - but I'm getting bored since my walking partner stopped walking with me a long time ago. It's just not the same when you're doing it by yourself. Don't get me wrong - sometimes I LIKE being by myself but I'm just getting bored.

Anyway, I'm just whining and will get over it so don't worry about me. I did start running and was doing quite well doing run/walk intervals where I would run for 1-2 minutes and then walk for 1-2 minutes but when I started the third week of the Couch to 5K and it required me to run for 3 minutes. I couldn't do it. I just get to a certain point when I have to stop. I can do it on the treadmill - but not outside. I got discouraged and stopped running. Haven't run since.

Boy, this is a whiny blog! Anyway, I'm looking forward to meet two of my Spark Friends who will be in town for the Dirty Girl Mud Run tomorrow! After I take my youngest to football practice, somehow get the house partly cleaned and walk 15.5 miles before 7 p.m. Wish me luck!

    Books on ipod? Learn a new language while you walk? Just suggestions... I understand the boredom - reason why I don't go farther than 5k!

    I think having a little whine is OK, especially when you know that's what you're up to. You've been working so hard, and your just near the end of this huge walking journey. What you've accomplished has been pretty amazing to read about, and I know you must think it is, too.

How often does black belt testing come around? My school used to do it 2x a year. If you miss this one, you'll have more time to brush up on your forms!

    Better to whine than eat your way through it! And besides, I like reading about your struggles as well as triumphs. I am envious of your commitment and determination my friend. You really and truly have planted a seed in my mind to try this long distance walking thing. I do know to that when I blog it's usually to vent. Keep Sparking!

    You are doing amazing!!!! 50 miles wow...but YOU GOT THIS!! and we are all entitled to whining every now and then....however i didn't think you were whining just venting a little bit which its so nice to be able to have an out let to do it! Have a GREAT weekend and have fun tomorrow!

    I admire you for your determination to stick with your walking training, especially since you are doing it alone now. Honestly, I probably would have given up already.

I can totally see why you are getting bored with walking being your main form of exercise and frustrated that it takes so long. That's originally what started me with the walk/run intervals, but I've never tried to do them outside... only on a treadmill. I hear that running outside is much more difficult.

Hang in there... you'll be done soon.

    I think you are doing amazing Chris. Just wondering if you change your routes when doing your walking, so that it doesn't get boring or have you added any new songs to your playlist? I can imagine the long walks on the weekends can get hard doing by yourself, just hang in there. I can totally relate on the running. Running on uneven ground is harder than running on the treadmill. Can't wait to see you tomorrow!! emoticon emoticon

    HOLY GUACAMOLE!! I know I am a new spark friend so I haven't heard much about this 50 mile walk. That is amazing!! I don't think you sound whiny :) Sometimes it feels better to get on spark and blog a little bit to vent out our frustrations. You are a rock star!

    Good luck! You ARE whiny! No...just kidding. We all feel this way sometimes. I was like that this morning...like a little kid stomping his feet and saying "I don't wanna..." We all have to deal with that little kid inside of us sometimes. Are you listening to anything good while you're walking? Are you walking in different settings? Those two things come to mind as maybe good solutions to help you get through some feelings of boredom with the mileage. Push through it... emoticon You are so close! You're gonna get there.
