I went to see the (remake of the) movie Sparkle today.
It is the last movie Whitney Houston performed in before her untimely and tragic death.
So many emotions ran through me watching her performance. So much pain.
I could imagine her dear mother, Cissy, watching her and serving as an inspiration for her character as mother of three talented girls.
I could imagine her daughter, Bobbie Christina, watching her and crying from missing her so very much.
I thought she was terrific in The Bodyguard, for a first effort. The role suited her.
Personally, I thought she ruined Waiting to Exhale. When her lover was making excuses over lunch for why he couldn't leave his wife, I wanted to see her character get MAD. I couldn't see that emotion on her face. Between Angela Bassett setting that car on fire and Loretta Devine walking away from Gregory Hines, I thought Whitney was thoroughly upstaged.
But this movie...wow. She was a presence.
So when Sparkle sings the song "Broken Wing" dedicated to her Sister, I thought of dear Whitney, an angel with a broken wing, victim of the lifestyle shown in the film.
Rest in peace Whitney. Thank you for blessing us with that marvelous voice of yours while you were here. Hope you are singing in the Heavenly Choir, soaring on both wings.
The following are publicity photos for the movie found on the Web -
I have no claim on these.
