Anyone from Cleveland or the Akron Area?

Thursday, August 16, 2012

My son has a college friend who came back to visit the area this spring so that he, my son, and a group of other friends could go to a special concert in St. Louis. He stayed a week here and my son and the other friends were his hosts and showed him around St. Louis and this area.

This friend has invited these same friends to visit him in Akron. My son is the only one who can get off work to go as the other friends don't have enough vacation time left.

Getting there will be a challenge. My son won't be able to drive there as his vehicle is too old and he is not used to driving in big cities anyway. He can't fly due to ear problems. So that leaves traveling by train or Greyhound bus.

He checked into the train schedule and he could board a train about 25 miles from here at 7 in the morning. He would have a lengthy lay over in Chicago and arrive in Cleveland at 1 in the morning. Apparently the train doesn't go on to Akron and he is not sure how he could get there, especially at one in the morning. His college friend doesn't drive so he can't pick him up, which is weird to me but apparently not that uncommon if you live in cities. Is the Cleveland train station a safe place for someone to stay at that time of the morning until someone could pick him up or he could make other arrangements? Do they have rental cars there? Cabs to take you somewhere if this place is not safe?

The bus goes into Akron but we have been told a lot of negative things about bus travel such as the bus stops are in bad neighborhoods and that people are often assaulted, robbed, even occasionally killed on buses and at these stations. He would have layovers with the buses too and have to change buses 3 times. He would arrive at the bus stop in Akron at 5:45 A.M.

I would appreciate if anyone has any advice for me. We live in a very rural area and know nothing about things like this.

We always drive when in the Cleveland area. Sorry I can't be of any help on this one. I definitely do not want to be stuck in Cleveland or surrounding areas without my car...and my DH!!!
Blessings and hugs,
Helen

Have him plan his trip so that his isn't driving in Cleveland at night, if that bothers him. Cleveland, like any city has it's good and bad.

Is his friend able to give him any tips?

The east side of Cleveland is scary at night. So I would prearrange to rent a car or call a cab to take him to a car rental place. Look one up on Google before traveling and call a cab while on the bus to meet him there as he arrives then take the cab to rental place and viola! Rental Car!

It's about 45 minuets from Cleveland to the Akron area. I grew up in a small town, Avon Lake in Akron County.

A cab ride might be expensive, but renting a car could be the best option price wise, Then he would have a way to drive around with out worry.

Hope this helps.
:)

I also like the idea of renting a car. We always rent cars while on vacation. I also rented a car to drive my son to Winnipeg (1288 miles) as we are a one vehicle family. For the trip to Winnipeg, I rented a large car with unlimited mileage. It was expensive, but no worse than a plane ticket.

Hi Tish I agree about the ear plugs, you can get them made up to fit Ian's ears .. a Plane is a much safer way to travel !! .
Hope all get sorted !!.

I was wondering if your Son would be better off renting a car for the trip?

Just giving you an option I didn't see on your blog.

"M" I have ear problems. When we flew in to Cincinnati I had an ear pain that was very severe. When i got home the Dr said the blood would go away on its own and it did.
He said I should have some ear plugs made and he made them for me. I laid down and wax was poured in to my ears for molds they were sent away to be made of silicone i am Latex sensitive.

I fly with them and I swim with them . Everyone thinks I cannot hear what they are saying but the sound carries right through. How convenient some days. HUGS Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I would not recommend the bus at all. Hubby and I had a friend come to visit us (from MD) and we picked him up at the Akron Greyhound station. It was a dump...completely run down and I seem to remember that they lost the friend's luggage.

I don't know anything about the Cleveland train station, so I can't help you there. You should keep in mind, though, that Akron is about an hour's drive south of Cleveland.

If he absolutely can't fly, I would suggest he think about maybe renting a car and making the drive himself.

For clarity's sake, I live in NE Ohio...sort of between Akron and Cleveland.

I would say overcome the flying worry. tbh it is a peice of cake. The train is super expensive as well. If he buys tickets a bit in advance he can get them cheap as well. As for crime it is always there but if your careful and do not talk to folks you can avoid it in most cases. wish I could be of more help. emoticon

Trains seem to always run at inconvenient times and run sooooo slow. Never can plan on being on time on the train it seems. Wish I could help, hopefully someone from Cleveland will see your post. I am a small town girl and tend to trust no one. Bring a shank! lol Maybe his friend can get a cab and meet him there at 1 am and they can just return home in the same cab? Seems like most of the Amtrak stations have been getting spruced up in the past few yrs. The two by us went from kinda shabby scary places to huge brick buildings that the city dotes on. Hopefully the Cleveland one is the same.
