Tomorrow is my birthday. Not a specifically monumental one, but a nice even number that is closer to 50 than Iím ready to admit. And it is falling on a Wednesday the week before my kiddos start back to school and a week after my husband started his new job. All that adds up to chaos and not a lot of time to enjoy myself.
Like I do every year, Iíve been thinking about what special foods I want to eat on my birthday. I know people who eat potato chips for breakfast on their birthdays but there really isnít one thing that I only eat on special occasions. Also, as much as I might desire to, I canít really pig out on my birthday. Iím old and have to eat small portions. Last week I ate a small(ish) hamburger and small fries at one of these retro looking (but not retro-priced) hamburger joints that seem to be all the rage and I felt as if Iíd swallowed a boulder. At midnight I was still full and couldnít get to sleep until 2 AM.
It is at times like these that I realize how much Iíve used food as my celebration. Other people eat when they are sad but Iíve always eaten when I was happy. Yeah, itís my birthday- have a chocolate milkshake! Congrats on your new job Ė scarf down a giant slice of pizza with artichoke hearts! It is the first day of vacation Ė eat four pounds of fried seafood! Woo Hoo!
This year, I might eat something special like a breakfast taco with turkey bacon but for me going out to eat for my birthday is now more about spending time with my family and not having to wash dishes afterwards.
