ChestPain BreastPain ShoulderPain 8 Hours in ER

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I AM OKAY, so let me start with that. I woke up yesterday morning with an elephant stepping on my breastplate bone, the pain shot throught to my back and radiated out sharply to my upper arms, shoulders, and up the sides of my neck. Every breath hurt immensely... I thought I was having a coronary.

8 Hours, three pain shots, and a CATScan with contrast showed nothing more than what might be fluid or scar tissue on my esophagus. I was sent home in almost as much pain as I arrived with. Decided to lay down after a couple more pain pills, got up at 10pm stayed up for an hour, layed back down, now I've been up for an hour again, contemplating sleeping some more.

I've had pleurisy following chest infections numerous times, but that was more localised pain, this was pretty much all consuming upper body pain. Every breath no matter how shallow hurt with no less than an 8 our of 10 on the pain scale.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this? I sure don't want to go through it again, it came out of nowhere with such fierocity, I hope it leaves quickly and silently.

Again, I stress to you that I AM OKAY just looking for advice or comments from anyone that's experienced anything like this. I am going to lay down and see if I can't wrestle another 4 hours sleep out of this night. I hope you awaken renewed and refreshed and ready for a great day.

    Hi Sprink,

I'm so sorry you went through this, but very glad you're ok.
I was impressed you posted about it!! :) You're a trooper!

I have suffered with costochondritis and wondered if your episode might be something like that. I am not a dr or anything like that; just suggesting the possibility since you mention that they ran tests at hospital and it was not related to your heart.

Costochondritis is very, very painful chest pain that originates in the sternum and can radiate out to the ribs, arms, back, upper body. I've been on "costo" (as it's lovingly referred to) board forums, where people have said that their initial experience of it felt like a heart attack.

Just something for you to consider.
