Distracted Driving Pledge

Monday, August 13, 2012

In the last week I've taken a dead kitty and dead puppy off of the road. Both were terrible experiences for me.
However, because of the increased frequencies in hit and run pets, as well as wildlife, I am personally vowing to NOT 'distracted drive'.

What does that mean? ZERO texting. ZERO use of tools on my phone (ie: calculator, calender, etc). MINIMAL looking at the radio station, staring off at houses/birds/people/farmland/ or whatever is not in front of me. And working on only talking if my bluetooth is working.

I will stop treating driving as such a convenient commodity and look at it for what it is: I am the sole controller of a 2+ TON beast.

I make this pledge b/c of my love for the little living things.
Anyone with me? Whats your reason?

(Side note/edit: while I know primarily texting is the cause, there are also many other circumstance that cause us to divert our attention away. Changing ipod music, unwrapping our food, dropping something, putting on makeup. All of these things need to be eliminated. Whatever is your distraction: pull over! You can be 30 seconds later. Its better than risking your life, or someone else, or something else.)

Maryland and Delaware are both cell phone free states, fines if caught.
I love your pledge. I will admit that I do use my cell phone while driving. I text only at red lights.
I think there are certain times of the month too that I have noticed there are more animals on the road. I think I read that something with the cycle of the moon has an effect. Kinda like when the kids at school go batty when it is a full moon, similar with animals being hit.

Great pledge! I know how you feel about the little critters. When I first started driving, I ran over a cat that was already dead (it was just over a hill) and I cried for an hour... Anyways, so much is at stake. Great pledge.

I have my children text for me when I'm driving. If they are not with me, I either call (hands free) or pull over to text. Agreed we have to be responsible!

We have a Distracted Driving Law here, NOTHING in your hands as you drive. $170.00 fine if caught.

Good to remind ourselves from time to time that cell phones and driving don't go together.

I am so with you! And I take this pledge because I had to try and console my sister when her good friend was killed by a woman who ran a red light because she was texting while driving. There was no reason for his death. There is nothing so important that you should be willing to risk the lives of other people to text while you drive.
