I have to act as if I am diabetic

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Technically I'm "just" insulin resistant. But if I overdo the carbs my sugar goes way too high. I went to a potluck. There were carbs, carbs, sugary carbs, some veggies, carbs and more sugary carbs. I brought some chicken which was a good counterpoint and fortunately didn't offend the host who I didn't know was vegetarian. But honestly the only protein she had was mixed with carbs (mac and cheese). I didn't eat carefully enough and now my sugar is too high. I have to think diabetically so that I don't actually end up as a diabetic.

I find that potlucks are generally not too good for me either. I eat too many strange foods together and my stomach revolts. I also don't need the sugary treats. Once in a while I choose to have a sweet treat but I can pick what and where. It seems like desserts are a big deal at potlucks. One is too many and a thousand never enough.

I did enjoy some treats on Saturday but they were portion size and one was vegetable based and low in calories and organic. Today I made a smoothie and that is so much better than so many of those other treats.

I am not insulin resistant or diabetic though I think that the principles of the diabetic diet are very helpful to go by and I try to think that I don't want diabetes so that I will be somewhat more careful. It is a blessing to not have diabetes at this point in my life in spite of my weight.

My uncle had it and it was very horrible for him. He did not seem to be able to stick to the diet and ended up with cancer yet. It was very sad.

Hope that you can get back into healthy eating and start the week off well. Good luck! emoticon

Actually, following the diabetic diet is probably the best diet around. There's really great whole-grain and also veggie made pasta that tastes fantastic. I never miss pasta now because we have it in house. Only issue is rice; I can't stand brown rice and wild rice is something we don't keep on hand. I've never tried it, but I'm told it's a bit more time consuming to make.

Several relatives from both sides of my family are diabetic. My mother and two of five siblings also have it. I'm not diabetic or insulin resistant, but I follow the diabetic diet to avoid getting it. I like the food and never feel deprived. Few in my family are as careful about their food choices as me.

I don't know if you know about chromium picolinate. It helps your body store the sugar from your blood stream bringing down your glucose. Around the holidays in past years I have had to use it, but it works. I hope I won't this year, but I do have some on hand. I hope you get to feeling better soon.
