A glass of milk

GLASS OF MILK

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his
Way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was
hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his
nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! . She thought he looked
hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and
then asked, How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to
accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically,
but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give
up and quit.

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill.
The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city,
where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the
name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her
life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for
approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill
was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take
the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught
her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...

"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed:
"Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through
human hearts and hands."

There's a saying which goes something like this:
Bread cast on the water comes back to you. The good deed you do
today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place - And, after all, isn't that what life is all about?

    Touching!

Makes me think of all those cases on TV where one unseeming incident after another works in the favor of a lost person being found. And, I always know that is God directing things to happen that way. And, sometimes it crosses my mind, "why doesn't God keep the bad thing from happening in the first place.?" The reason is that he doesn't take away people's free will, but he does help in these strange and wonderous ways that show us miricles today that God does indeed exist. And, commonly he uses humans to demonstrate that.

I have two good friends who I wish doctors would do this for them.

Found out today that Southwest Airlines pays for people who can't afford it to get to doctors/hospitals in other states.

It is remarkable how many Drs write off bills or pay for other patient expenses. I would have loved to see that tid-bit in the original story because things like that make me sure that great people dwell in this cruel world of ours. I wish Giant - steps had a Sparkpage where I could make her my friend

This story is only partly true. It is true that Howard Kelly stopped at a farmhouse asking for a drink of water and a girl brought him a tall glass of fresh milk. He later became one of the founding doctors at John Hopkins. It is also true that years later she came in for an operation and Dr. Kelly remembering her indicated that her bill was paid in full with a glass of milk. However, Howard Kelly was never a poor boy peddling door to door to work his way through school. She wasn't critically ill with a baffling life-threatening disease. Dr. Kelly did write off her bill but he also wrote off the bills of 3/4ths of his patients. There is no reason to believe that Dr. Kelly was having a spiritual crisis.
It is a good story without embellishments. Stories like this meant to be inspirational tend to take on a life of their own with the story getting more poignant with each telling.

This sounds like one of the many stories told by Paul Harvey and reminds me how much I miss hearing those daily programs.

Glad I strumbled upon your blog. I believe in divine positioning. The in every moment people are placed in our paths to help us - either through learning or by example.

A smile was placed upon my face because of your sharing. Hope your day is great!
