08/08/12 – preparing to start Fit by 40

I currently weigh in at 340 lbs. +. The plus is there because my bathroom scale has started giving me error messages for me being over 340 lbs. I doubt that it is more than a lb. or two, but believe me, it is an endless source of embarrassment. My ideal weight should be closer to about 185. In other words, I weigh almost twice what I should.
It is no wonder, when you gather what I like to eat:

My current favorite breakfast is Hardees’ Country Fried Steak biscuit with gravy (590 calories), a Sausage biscuit with cheese (530 calories) and a large Dr. Pepper (300 calories). This meal is roughly 1420 calories with 175 grams of carbs, 72 grams of fat and 70 milligrams of cholesterol.

My current favorite lunch is Sonic’s Footlong Quarter pound Coney (830) calories, large French fries (430 calories), a large Dr. Pepper (250 calories) and a small Oreo Blast (900 calories). This meal is roughly 2410 calories with 294 grams of carbs, 142 grams of fat and 215 milligrams of cholesterol.

It was a Sonic Double Bacon Cheeseburger with mustard (1280 calories), large French fries (430 calories), a large Dr. Pepper (250 calories) and a medium Oreo Blast (1230 calories). This meal is roughly 3190 calories with 324 grams of carbs, 198 grams of fat and 450 milligrams of cholesterol. That is a difference of 780 calories with 30 grams of carbs, 56 grams of fat and 235 milligrams of cholesterol from what I was eating regularly.

My current favorite supper is half of a medium Pizza Hut Meat Lover’s Pizza (452 calories), roughly 3 cups of Breyer’s Oreos and Cream ice cream (840 calories), and a 16.9 oz. Dr. Pepper (210 calories). This meal is roughly 1502 calories with 302 grams of carbs, 99 grams of fat and 302 milligrams of cholesterol.

This means, if I took in my favorite meals all in one day (which has been known to happen), I would take in a total of 5332 calories with 771 grams of carbs, 313 grams of fat and 587 milligrams of cholesterol. By contrast, according to SparkPeople.com I should be taking in 2,330-2,680 calories, 262-436 grams of carbs, 52-104 grams of fat. Cholesterol is not listed, but according to LiveStrong.com, it should not exceed 300 mg of cholesterol a day.

So on a super splurge day, I am currently exceeding my max limits by 2652 calories with 335 grams of carbs, 209 grams of fat and 287 milligrams of cholesterol. Or eating (and exceeding) twice what my goal should be for a day. I love the taste of food! I am no foodie by any means, but will often eat something I am in the mood for even when already full. It is no wonder I am so big!!!

I worry that if I continue at this rate, that I am not going to be here for my wife and daughter in the coming years. I already have had my gall bladder out 3 years ago, was hospitalized for a gall stone last November (yes, you can reportedly still have them even with no gall bladder), and am currently having trouble with yet another gall stone. I am surprised to not have been diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease….yet.

The only counter I have to this currently is by maybe hiking about 2.5-3 miles in an hour about 1 time per week. I am drinking little water at the time, and little in the way of vegetables and fruits. I was down to 265 lbs. almost 2 years ago to the date. I had lost down from around 320 lbs. in the course of about 4 months, was drinking water exclusively, and was hiking about 25 miles a week (or about 7.5 hours a week). Then I started my senior year of college, got stressed out, stopped exercising, started overeating and stress eating, and gained it all back… plus some. It is time to get back on track!

I turn 40 in 76 weeks. My goal is to lose 2 lbs. a week for the next 76 weeks, or 152 lbs. For argument’s sake, if I am currently 342 lbs., that would bring me down to 190 lbs. by my 40th birthday. The last time I weighed anywhere close to that amount would have been nearer to 9th grade, before I bulked out in the shoulders, and grew several inches. The closest I can remember being near that weight was when I was about 205 lbs. for a short amount of time at age 19. By 20 I was more around 220 lbs.

So Fit by 40 begins on 08/12/12. I am going to begin documenting my food and exercise on SparkPeople.com. I will also be posting weekly photos showing me in my various stages of weight loss, and I will be blogging somewhat regularly. I am cutting out sodas completely, will begin immediately eating within tolerance levels listed on Spark People and get back into exercising. Here’s to the journey of being half that man I am now!
