Brown Rice Wins Again!

Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Yesterday I posted a Secret of Success about how brown rice is an incredible part of my success. Apparently it's good to help balance blood sugar and it's one of the foods I can eat to chase off migraines. When I get a headache, I cook up a batch of brown rice faster than I can ever find a bottle of pain killer.

Today, I found an even greater appreciation for my brown rice. I cooked a batch, last night and made tuna rice salad with it for today's lunch. I filled two containers and put them in the fridge. I took one with me for my lunch and the other one made for an instant supper when I got home, which after walking to and from work today for the first time (ten miles total), was EXACTLY what I needed. Now, I'm cooking tomorrow's brown rice and getting ready to hit the shower!

Will I get tired of brown rice? I sure did get tired of migraines, that's one thing for sure! I'm looking to use brown rice in just about any rice or pasta dish and may even make some shepherd's pie or cottage pie with brown rice on top instead of mashed potatoes. It's also a great addition to mixed bean salad, soup and even chile, Greek or Mexican dishes and I'll be looking to even try making dessert dishes with it - perhaps some chocolate and cherries or something lemony. Maybe in place of oatmeal in cookie recipes, etc (not that I'm knocking oatmeal!) :) I might even mix pizza or lasagna ingredients into some brown rice, sans wheat products. Hmmm, can I put cooked brown rice into the blender?..... :) I'll need to get a blender to find out! ;)

I never heard of eating brown rice for headaches, is it instant or the regular? I love rice, but never ate it steady. My sister in law is Filipino & they eat it for breakfast as a side dish, she has it with every meal. I am going to start eating rice more often thanks for posting your blog

personally I prefer brown rice to white, and eat it about 1 time a week, not sure if I could eat it every day, but with variation, why not.

I really like brown rice and could really eat it every day. However, I must admit you are taking it to a whole different level with all your creative ideas for recipes.

Part of my super strict ten-day diet included brown rice pasta as I was not allowed any wheat products at all. It's not bad, especially when I can get it on sale, then it's pretty exciting, but I'm working on cutting out as much processing as I can (though I'm still happy to eat an occasional Big Mac or Twinkie! LOL), and looking to cut costs and I *think* by weight, brown rice is cheaper than the pasta. I like making "One Pot Pasta" (got my first recipe for it from Kraft Kitchens, which is also online) and really, by the time you make it in one pot, it doesn't seem to matter if it's pasta or rice. They even make pasta to look like rice! (Orzo? etc) If you stir in some cheese with tomato sauce and ground beef, it starts tasting like lasagna in a hurry. I found that out even with mixed vegetables while I was still experimenting with food allergies before meeting the Naturopath that helped us.

I hope that helps! :)

I expect it can get old after a while - I've been using it to deal with my migraines for the past ten years or so, but during that time it was for ten days straight of very strict diet that included little else, three years of being headache-free so not thinking too much about it and then the rest to counter occasional headaches or migraines. Chocolate, fruit, dairy products and more will also contribute to more migraines, but I'll be looking for a healthy balance that keeps me headache-free and meets my nutritional without becoming too boring or restrictive.

I like brown rice over most other types.....I'm not as creative as you, but tell you what when you start experimenting with your substituting brown rice for pasta etc..please let me know how they turn out. I usually have rice once a week and wheat pasta once every couple of weeks. Great job in walking to/from work....are you planning on doing this often? Or are you waiting to see how you feel in the morning? Have a good night and happy dreams. Hugs!
