August Goals

Tuesday, August 07, 2012

I am pleased that the challenges that began informally in spring and continued during the summer are bearing fruit. I had a misstep during the last week of July, but no matter, onward and downward.

Goal setting has motivated me and created a momentum that pushes the scale in the downward direction. Now that my body is getting more in line with my goals, I will focus on getting my mind more active.

I watch too much TV. Sometimes I eat just because of this idle activity. Even if I don’t, at the end of the evening I feel like I could have spent my time better.

This month I will replace some TV time with other activities.

Here are some TV alternatives: Drawing/Juggling/Reading/Guita
r/Walk/Call a Friend/ Study Poetry/write a love note to my honey/study language/take a walk/workout/meditate. These are things I have always wanted to do, or wish to resume, or could use more of.

I also need to take better care of the house, so other things I can do: wash the dishes/laundry/garden/ clean car/ pack tomorrow’s lunch or workout gear / do HOA business /Sort Mail/Clean out purse/get finances in order to purchase new home

I will also continue tracking what I eat, with the objective of staying within calorie range. Additionally working out with both cardio and strength training activities are important as my boot camp class begins in late August and I want to be up for it. If my hip doesn't like it, I'll take a strength training class.

These are the month’s goals:

Week 1: (Aug 12)
Sign up for poetry class on ed2go!
Spend 30 minutes on the ‘TV Alternatives’ list M-W-F
Spend 15 minutes T/Th doing something from the ‘house care’ list above.
After I’ve completed these tasks, I can waste my time on TV or internet once more!

Week 2: (Aug 19)
Go to poetry class.
Spend 45 minutes on the ‘TV Alternatives’ list M-W-F
Spend 30 minutes T/Th doing something from the ‘house care’ list above.
After I’ve completed these tasks, I can waste my time on TV or internet once more!

Week 3: (Aug 26)
Go to poetry class.
Spend 60 minutes on the ‘TV Alternatives’ list M-W-F
Spend 30 minutes T/Th doing something from the ‘house care’ list above.
After I’ve completed these tasks, I can waste my time on TV or internet once more!

Week 4: (Sep 2)
Go to poetry class.
Spend 60 minutes on the ‘TV Alternatives’ list M-F
Spend 30 minutes T/Th doing something from the ‘house care’ list above.
After I’ve completed these tasks, I can waste my time on TV or internet once more!

========================
How's it going:
I did well in the M/W 'fun' days. I managed to get some extra things done on T/T too, though I didn't enjoy it as much. I got through it by focusing on the outcome.

However, Fridays are not so easy. I don't want to do much on Fridays. I did learn that I need to refocus on basics like food logging and exercise, though. August was so hot that I didn't cook much, so I ate out too often. I also used that as an excuse to skip the pool a few too many times. (Does that even make sense? No. I know)

Lessons:
I need a day that isn't rigid. A day that just goes with the flow. I also need to mind what I eat on days like that and when I eat out of the house at restaurants or parties.

Next months, I have some career goals I want to focus on. The online classes are still going for a few more weeks and the community (p.e.) classes have started, so I will be forced to strength train and practice swimming. The only thing I need to add is to be more aware of what I eat and a couple of extra cardio sessions (as swimming is only once a week)

One more thing: Not too long ago, one of my goals was to shift to an AM person. I think I'm there now. I no longer crave staying up late. Even on the weekend, I might sleep in an hour, but I'm still up hours earlier than in the past. Yay! Small changes become habits!

Wow, Goriana, this setting monthly goals is certainly working for you. I love the fact that you are learning lessons that enable you to find solutions. It reminded me of a quote which I thought was from Einstein, but I found that it was Thomas Edison that said :  " If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward."

In just a few months, you have made substantial changes that enrich your life, not just weight-loss-related.

I'm very happy for you!

  Hi, Goriana!

I saw your status message today about your new tan and thought I would come and have a peek to see whether you posted your progress vis-à-vis your monthly goals.

I'm sure you are doing well and keeping very busy doing pleasant activities other than watching TV, including your new classes. Have fun!

Isn't it funny that you decided to replace part of your TV and Internet time by more creative or more useful activities, and you end up finding more creative activities on the Internet?

So by the time I read your recent comment, you have already started your new classes! emoticon Can't wait to hear I you are enjoying them!

Week 1: I found out that my local library offers free ed2go online classes! I was tempted to sign up for ten classes, but that would have been too much load, so I signed up for two: guitar and poetry. Next time I might take the music theory class and drawing. I hope the free program lasts.

The classes don't start until Wednesday, so I get to read on Monday. Plus, I have the day off! I might go shopping or to the movies or to a museum if I can find one open.

I am jazzes about the upcoming week!

  Hi, Goriana,

I really like your August goals. I think you have the right priorities : replace TV time with mostly enjoyable activities and only a small portion by chores. It reminds me of my favourite book about time management : 'Get It All Done and Still Be Human' by Tony and Robbie Fanning (1979). I just googled it & found out there was a 1990 edition. In any case, in that book, the object of better time management is not to perform better at work, but to get more time for fun activities (learning music, etc.).

May you find plenty of time for swimming and preparing good-for-you goodies to treat yourself!

Good luck with the boot camp class or strength training!

Have fun!
