Monday, August 06, 2012

The main reason I post blogs is to get things off my chest. I find that if I throw my 'troubles' out into the universe, the weight falls off my shoulders and I can regroup easier than if I stifle them.

Once again, this has proven true. I woke up this morning. I got out of bed. I threw on my workout gear. I ran the 5k around my neighborhood that I had only been doing half-assed lately. I got back home. I did my post-running stretches. I didn't feel DONE. I went into the spare bedroom and hopped on the elliptical machine for 30 minutes. After that, I got on the stationary bike for a 5 minute cool down. I showered, then grabbed a bowl of cereal.

I decided to get back to the fundamentals. I took my measuring cup with me. I poured my 3/4 cup of Special K. I added milk. I ate. I felt satisfied. It's funny how you think you're getting screwed if the bowl isn't full. What a waste of space! But going back to that 3/4 cup felt good. It felt right.

I donated a triple shot of platelets this morning. There is nothing quite like a selfless act to make you realize how much more others are in need than you. My stuff seems petty and trivial.

I said it in one of my first blogs, when I talked about blood donation, but I'll bring it up again here. I have special blood. You see, I never gained a certain component that most people get as they grow up. Because I test negative for this component, my blood is, for lack of a better term, 'pure'. So, although my platelets go to leukemia and other cancer patients regardless, babies have priority to my blood. How incredible is that? I am helping the most innocent of the helpless. It's a cool thing. So I will admit I enjoyed some mini Chips Ahoys in the refreshment area (things always taste better when they're free! LoL). I earned it. But I did stick with my water instead of juice or soda.

I just got home. I had my healthy lunch. The only thing I'm craving right now is ice water. Well, and a nap. I did just get drained, literally, and am drained, figuratively.

So my Lovelies, thank you for being my sounding board. For being the universe I throw my thoughts into. Smooches to all!

Here is me this morning, pre-draining, LoL

Great blog, and it's wonderful that you give blood. I donated until I was 67. It's so easy to do, and yet so few people do it! Congratulations, and I hope your blog inspires other people to donate.

You do deserve a nap! Most of us don't think about blood donation until there is a need but it is so important. Thank you!

I used to always give blood. Apparently my blood type isn't all that common so there is more need for it then "O". I haven't donated in a while, I guess I had better get back in the habit. Thanks for the reminder!

Love this!! I donate blood. My dad volunteered for red cross for 4 years when he was alive and so it's my tribute to him to keep the volunteering going. Way to go with your exercise for the day. :)

Donating blood, platelets etc is itself a gift. Since I lived in Europe for a few years in the early 80's, I am no longer allowed to donate blood, and I miss the opportunity so much! It has something to do with the "mad cow" thing. To those of you are allowed to give this priceless gift - don't take it for granted! Many people wish they could donate and aren't allowed.

We share blood donation to babies in common. I frequently (as frequently as blood donations can be!) get called when I'm past my regular donation schedule to come in to donate and when I do, they have a special "Pedi-pac" ready instead of the regular single bag. With babies being smaller, 1 regular donation can help 3 infants - it's a great feeling - especially since my own daughter needed blood during a surgery when she was 12 weeks old!

    Yaay you!!!

I used to do platelet donations, especially while trying to rai$e fund$ for college. My left arm has a corkscrew coiled veins so I ended up not able to donate as frequently - took too long for rught arm to heal up between donations. These days I help my husband coordinate the blood drives at his office - so the next one for NE Wichita is August 23, 2012 (thur).

So, gooooo you!!
