This morning at 7am, I started a ride that has been over a year in coming. Last year, I wanted to do this ride, but didn't feel that I was quite ready to finish. I was really excited to sign up, and sort of nervous this morning as I pinned on my number.
Well, it was fine. Fun, in lots of places. But most of all, doing the ride today proved to me that I am tougher than I thought. I did not have one moment when I wanted to drop out, though there were several places that tested me physically & mentally (that 1-mile CAT 5 climb in 85% humidity around mile 10 was certainly one of those!) and while I'm somewhat sore now, I also feel really proud of what I accomplished. (I'm glad that I didn't know how long that climb was when I started so I didn't psych myself out!) The heavy rain kicked in around mile 14.5, and persisted through the end of the course at 27 mi and the ride back to parking. No matter-- once I was already wet, I didn't mind the rain too much except for visibility. The second half of the ride was through downtown Pittsburgh and some heavily trafficked areas, so I made an effort to really keep up with various groups of other cyclists.
Here's the elevation chart (not mine):
I did it! 30 miles, including the to & fro! Onward... I wonder what ride I'll do next?!
