The next 5K I have on the calendar is on September 1st. I'm really excited about it and think it will be a fun course. This week we started a new 5K training session. This one is for 12 weeks. Instead of doing walking and running intervals, like the first 8-week session I attended, we now try to fun the whole time, increasing the distance each week. You run at your own pace, and can take a walking break if you need to. Because of the heat and high humidity, I have been able to run the whole time (for one mile) only once. The 2nd and 3rd days of the training (1 mile and then 1.5 miles) I did need a couple 30-second breaks, just to catch my breath. It's a little frustrating, but I have remember my own mantra that "slow and steady wins the race" and not push myself to where I get injured and can't run at all. If we get a break from this excessive heat, I do plan to push myself more and run the whole time and hopefully run a bit faster. There was a really good Sparkpeople Daily Blog this week about how to train to increase your speed in a 5k. I plan to try some of these suggestions on the days I run on my own.
It's really been fun and rewarding to work towards these goals and to work out with such a fun group of people. Mostly, I love surprising and proving to myself that I'm capable of more than I ever thought, and I'm only beginning! Who knew? Running is fun!
