Just call me Ricky Bobby (aka Tim)

Saturday, August 04, 2012

Yesterday i raced a NASCAR at speeds up to 150mph for 16 laps against 7 other drivers at NH Motor Speedway. This has been adream of mine for at least 20 years. When I began SPARK 19 months ago, I set a goal to loose 150 lbs by my 65th birthday (last month). Although I only lost 80 lbs so far, I was thin enough to fit into a NASCAR (or so I thought). These cars are designed for people who are less than 5'10" weighing less than 200 lbs. At 6'3" and 290 lbs, I was able to get in and out with with some weeping, crying and knashing of teeth...lol. while I loved the actual driving experience, the tenpature in the car was over 120 degrees and i was in a full firesuit and helmet so I probably lost 10lbs of water during the race! My struggle to get out of the car after the race resulted in throwing my back out , wrenching my neck and a general loss of dignity.....but I would do it again tomorrow in a heartbeat! emoticon

I have set a goal to loose 50lbs by my 66th birthday and will reward my efforts with a tandem skydive. I expect it will be a lot easier to get out of the plane than a NASCAR! emoticon

For 20 years when i was too fat to fit in a NASCAR ithought that was the only reason I didn't do it but a funny thing is that it is far more physically challenging at 65 than it would have been at 45....so if you have the same dream as I did....get fit now and do it as young as you can. emoticon

WOW! What a great experience. Too bad about your back, but that happened after, so at least you could live out your dream in comfort. Even if it was 120 degrees.

Fantastic!! You did it!! Sorry for the back and neck, but it is a milestone you should cherish and celebrate!! Now when you do that tandem jump, you may just need a helmet camcorder so we can all participate vicariously! Take care and keep up the great work!! -Marsha
