Wanting for Others

Thursday, August 02, 2012

I'm trying. Genuinely spending time and energy and (frankly) money into healthier foods and working out and doing everything on my part to lose weight in a healthy manner.

And I'm excited. Coworkers are starting to notice and clothes are starting to loosen up after being a bit tight and I'm feeling good. So I'm not trying to get myself or anyone else down when I say this:

It's not enough anymore.

I have friends who are also heavy, who talk about loosing weight and wanting it for themselves. Who talk a good talk. I want these feelings I'm getting of glee and happiness for my friends and family.

How do you help? how do you motivate? How do you get someone to stop being lazy and get up and move around.....

I know that there are people in my life who have felt that same way about me. I know that I all of the sudden had a light switch flip and I got it for me. But that doesn't stop me from hurting for a best friend who claims to want this but continues on with no change.

Keep on sparking on. That's what you do.

Eventually when they are ready they too will have their moment & like you said "the light switch" will flip for them. emoticon

Keep doing what you are doing & they will see the progress and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. When they are ready, they know you'll be there to support them!

Dollfacedx said it. Just think, surely we've all had glorious examples in our lives at a time when we just weren't ready to see. I think that SparkPeople does a great job of making this a whole lifestyle change, and not just a (Diet Program Name Here!) that will (melt/shred/blast) all your fat away (overnight/30 days/as long as you buy these pills). I do give a quick shout out to SparkPeople and the great tools for motivation, tracking, eating right when people ask.

You just continue with your program - advertise without pushing - one day, the light bulb will go off for them when they are ready.

All you can do is set a good example for them. You can show them how happy you are when you eat right and get plenty of exercise. You also can stop participating in unhealthy activities with them. Instead of going out to dinner, invite your friends out bowling or hiking. Rather than watch a movie while eating snacks, play a board game that keeps your mind and hands occupied.

If someone inquires about your healthy habits, by all means tell them about the changes you've made and what works for you. Unfortunately, you can't make someone change and "get it" all of a sudden. They have to want it for themselves.
