I re-re-re-read Eat for Health! There are protein foods for vegetarians!

Thursday, August 02, 2012

Your ideas, folks, were wonderful! I am continually learning from SP. I get praises from the naturopath all the time. And my friends at SP are the reason I am able to progress ! emoticon emoticon emoticon

My first 'error' was that Furhman ( right on the back of the book cover) emoticon said choose your own pace for getting into his eating plan! OH!

Secondly, I tried to follow the given menu for the first week. He gave a whole page of simpler meals too!..........................
.. I guess I missed that page before! emoticon I was getting very overwhelmed by all the various ingredients AND all the new recipes!
He did not mean I had to do that! emoticon

Now--about meat and protein! I thought I was aiming at not eating meat except in tiny quantities. emoticon Well the first week's menus have plenty of meat recipes. Not that I think back, why did I think I had to eliminate meat when he had a whole section of recipes with meat! emoticon

And, lastly, even without meat and animal products, like phase 4, he gives plenty of ways to include protein: tofu, beans and rice, fish, substitutes for dairy, nuts, seeds. And he emphasizes to mix and match vegetables because the vegetables do have proteins. Some are incomplete proteins and must be eaten with another food to make a complete protein. Most salads have thick dressings made with nut butters, avocados, etc. So even the salads are filling.

I am still learning --and I guess that will go on for a long time!

Don't worry about making complete proteins within each and every meal. As long as you get it in within a day or two, your body puts them together just fine. :) The lady that wrote the book about complete proteins later wrote a book correcting herself, so I am surprised that Furhman is not up to date on that info. :o)

(Also, for the record, fish is meat, is an animal, and is not vegetarian. I am not trying to tell you what to eat or not eat, I am just clarifying because so many people misunderstand that issue for some reason. :) It is rather inconvenient when vegetarians and vegans are served fish by well meaning folks! :o) If someone tells you they are "vegetarian" but they eat fish, they are actually "mostly vegetarian" or "pescetarian".)

Well, since I started grilling, I have found my carbs are up, my protein is up, my fat is down (that is temporary-because we need good fat in our food intake) and my calories are at an all time low. I'm full right now and my intake is 772 calories CHO 103 Fat 19 Protein 61 (my minimum protein intake) I seldom go below 1000, but today I'm going to quit while I'm full, not eat just to make a number.

Eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, yellow squash, banana pepper, watermelon... and not in small quantities... very satisfying! Hope you just think about what you like, grill it up, and sit down and enjoy! All those fancy recipes will come in due time.

I bought a copy of the book on Monday, and it has been an interesting read. There are many similarities to the Eat Clean books, and I have been following several very health minded Vegan posters. There are many ways to succeed. Just be sure you eat a healthy mix. Balance is the key, when choosing a new lifestyle.

Maybe the trick is to slow down, reread everything twice, and really think it through before trying to make such drastic changes. Sounds like you got ahead of yourself, made a snap judgement, then tried to skip a lot of steps. Changing must be done slowly or your body will have severe physiological stresses that make the changes much more difficult. Small changes over time will get you to where you want to be, whereas making instant, drastic changes make both the mind and body stress out to the point of giving up.

Try reading it again and writing down what you think you're reading in a notebook. Wait a couple days then do it again. Then see how your thoughts changed the 2nd time. Read it a 3rd or 4th time until the thoughts are consistent and concise, then use those thoughts to formulate a plan. Sure, it will take a lot of time and effort, but you will have a plan to follow, not jumping into something willy-nilly and hoping it works.

WE all have lots to learn. We have had a lifetime of learning to eat the wrong way and it takes time and constant viligence to change and not get bogged down and forgetting and returning to old habits! :) Congrats on the progress!! Celebrate those "non-scale" victories! :)

Everything has protein, even bananas. Elephants don't eat meat. Take it slow. Watch eating too much fat. It's the killer. Eating lots of avocado & nuts can put you right up there with meat eaters. Check out vegsource.com for lots of easy veggie recipes. Good luck.
