Doctor's Appointment

Thursday, August 02, 2012

So I'm going to the gyno today. I'm really not looking forward to it. Last time I went was three years ago (and that was the first time I'd ever been, haha!) and it didn't go well. I brought up concerns that I might have PCOS, the doctor said I probably did based on my reported symptoms, tried to prescribe me birth control for it, and disparaged my alternative treatment to lose weight instead. ("Let me know if you figure out how to do that!")

This is a different doctor luckily, and I really do need to get better about going for my annual checkup since it looks like we're going to be here a while and I'll need someone for when I have kids anyway. I need to talk to him about PCOS (again) and my concerns about getting my cycle sorted out. My last one was 4 months long, yay. And I'm going to ask him about insulin resistance and metformin. I hear mixed reviews of metformin, but my carbohydrate cravings and my mood when I get too hungry are getting out of control, so I'll "ask my doctor if it's right for me".

Wish me luck! :(

As soon as I am done nursing Lane I am going back on Metformin, in the beginning the side effects are horrid...not going to lie, but it's worth it for me once my body adjusts. My carb cravings are drastically reduced and if I follow a healthy eating plan I lose weight a lot faster with just exercise and diet alone. Just make you ask for the extended release tablets if you do choose the metformin route, the others wreck havoc with your um...stomach if you get my drift.

I started back on Metformin just at the end of May. I take 500 mg 2 times a day. I can happily say that along with eating healthy I have had a normal period for the past 2 months. I mean both have been at 32 days!

Now it might not be for you but I am also trying to get pregnant so Birth Control isn't an option and diet and exercise alone weren't working for me (had gotten down to 167 but still my periods weren't normal). But I personally think it would be good to talk about it with your DR. I am VERY happy I asked to get back on Metformin because I feel more in control of my body if that makes sense.

I do have to say though, that this time I did have some minor issues when restarting Meformin (a little TMI probably so I won't post but totally worth it.

Hope you got your questions answered!!

I am glad you found a better doctor. Sarcasm is NOT a good trait in a physician (or, really, in most people and I am a bit of a smart-@$$ myself). I would be interested to hear his opinion about the carb cravings, if you are comfortable sharing it.
