Saturday was my first 4 miler race. I had no close what to expect other then just trying to finish. My mom was naughty and called in to work so she could join me, and well go to our family picnic after.
The race started at 8:30 and the weather was awesome. 65-70 degrees with sun. Just enough to not freeze, or die of a heat stroke. Small race too! There was only 81 ladies to go. It was a bit sad for me, when I signed up for this race, it stated they were giving out technical shirts, so I ordered a size larger, but turns out they were just regular shirts. So now the thing is huge on me, which sucks but I made due. I just tied to with a hair tie in the back so it wouldn't look like a tent.
The race started and immediately most of the pack pulled away from me. I prepared myself to be alone with not many runners behind me. We started, and the sun was making it very hot. I told myself I HAD To run the first mile without stopping, which I did. Once I got to the second water stop, I started to do a run/walk thing. Of course, my watch wasn't going so I couldn't time myself one bit, but made the best of it.
Surpringsly, I didn't get passed until the end of my first lap. They must have flied! I hit the first lap around 28 minutes, while others were finishing! My gosh that is too fats. 7 minute miles! They sounded like they were dying too. Sorry, but I don't think I could every do that. Goodness.
After the first lap, I was in a dead zone. I couldn't see any runners in front of me or behind me, plus we were running on the road WITH cars, so it was a bit scary. I hit mile 3 and started to get excited. This race was almost over. I rounded the last bit of busy road, and just started crying. Not sure it was because I figured I was last or due to my leg hurting so bad, but I just wanted it over. I came around the last turn, on the CLOSED road and here comes cars. Really?! It supposed to be closed! There are too many hairpin turns that people could hit me on. Turns out, it was actually runners who finished and were leaving. Gee thanks all. Move your stupid minivan so I can finish. I really wish people stayed for the entire thing. It would be much more respectful, but eh, its karma.
I finally saw the finish line, and a couple around to cheer for me! Even though I didn't say anything (due to being so tired) it really meant alot to me. Just some random person cheering helps. I turned on my power and tried to run as fast as I can through that finish. At the end, I grabbed my water and ice cold towel for my neck. I immediately started crying. Not sure why to be honest. Could of been due to the pain or just being so happy to finish, but I was happy. Of course, this made my mother cry and say she was so happy for me. Right now, when I look at it, 4 miles doesn't sound like a big deal, but I guess it is!
Here were my splits:
Mile 1 - 13:19
Mile 2 - 27:36
Mile 3 - 41:02
Mile 4 - 56:35
I missed my last goal by 35 seconds. :( I think I need to get more realistic about my goals when I run.
Overall, I am happy I completed it. Do I wish I got a better time? Of course. But I have something to strive for. I thought about cooling off on my running for a while, but that is definitely not going to happen. I plan on doing the complete opposite. Thinking 2-3 runs a week, and longer runs. No more 2-2.5 miles. I am going to shoot for 3.5-5. I need to work harder.
Up next? Race #7 on 8/11. Run for Rachel 5K. Earlier this year, a 13 year old girl committed suicide because she was bullied so badly. Two children actually killed themselves for the same reason in 2 weeks. It's so sad. So I plan to be there, to show my support to stopping bullying.
I also really plan on PRing on this race. I already warned my brother that if I don't, to stay the hay away from me because I will be pissed. I am going to have to give it my all, but it's definitely possible. I plan to run 4 times before there, just to loosen up again. If not, definitely my September race. I may do two races in August, I shall see.
AFTER my race, we had a family get together at my uncles. Not as many people came, but it was still nice. I told myself to just eat what I want and I'd go back to normal on Sunday. My god he has everything. Sweet corn, pork tenderloin, BBQ chicken, pasta salads, and dips and desserts. I come from a family of good cooks. Plus, they have a nice pool set up outside, so I ran around in my swim suit all day. That was a first. And I actually felt confident. I have a two piece tankini. Red halter top and black bottoms. It was nice. I knew I looked good :) Even eating all that grub, I still was down 1.2 pounds today!
Except my sleep schedule is off today. I was up on Saturday from 6:45am to 1:30am. WHOA. Then slept in on Sunday til 1pm! I haven't done that since high school! Then slept from 3:30-6:30pm and back to bed at midnight, then up today at 6:45am. I need to get my sleep back to normal!
Although, I think a small run after work today would be amazing..
