I started getting really nervous about the 10k, I even had a dream about it Saturday night! I did a 10k last October, but since then I hadn't done a whole lot of longer runs, my longest being 5 miles two weeks before the scheduled virtual race.
It was pretty humid when I started, but I was ready for it. Mentally, I was strong through the whole race. Physically, I wasn't quite so great, but I made it through. I told myself I could walk the last mile if I felt I needed to, but I ran it. Right as I started, my right foot hurt, but it went away after a couple minutes. It came back later in the run, mostly when I was going uphill. I'm pretty sure it's not a stress fracture, but I'm not sure what it is. It feels like a muscle cramp...
I don't have an official time for my 10k last year (during the race where they only listed the times for the top runners, still mad about that one), but I thought I finished in about an hour. Now that I think about it, it had to be longer than an hour. I took a 1-minute walking break after each mile, so that would mean I'd have to be running sub 10min/miles for 6 miles, which I don't think I was capable at the time.
Anyway, yesterday's 10k time was 1 hour 17 minutes 6 seconds. Now I have a time to try to beat! My next 10k is in one month, but it's going to be a tough trail run. Hopefully I'll feel more prepared for that one than I did for this one.
My legs started cramping up while I was walking home after yesterday's race! They felt better once I stretched a bit and iced my muscles, but the stiffness and soreness came on pretty strong last night. They're actually okay this morning.
I'm so glad I signed up for the 10k rather than the 5k! I'm starting to really like the 10k distance! I think maybe someday I'll move on to 15k or possibly a half-marathon. For now, though, I'm sticking with 5k's and 10k's.
