any interview tips ? etc

Sunday, July 29, 2012

I am definately stressed and anxious. I have a job interview a week from tomorrow. It is for a classroom aide with a local headstart/preschool. They are interviewing several people so I really need to stand out and impress them. Any tips on what to say or not to say in the interview ? I am going to wear a nice dressy outfit and will probably wear my hair up. This would be great for me because it would be no nights, no weekends, and no major holidays and with being a single mom it is hard to get sitters for stuff like that.

I have also recently sent off my resume to a school that was looking to hire 3 teacher aide's and an entry level position . My cna certificate is still active at this point. Going to take my resume to another local school this week to maybe be considered as a sub teacher aide. If nothing pans out within the next week or two then I may go start applying at fast food places. It has been so long since I have worked fast food that I am not sure if I can keep up and I sweat like crazy anymore. Sucks cause alot of retail places won't consider you anymore if you can't work all shifts on all days. I am praying that the right thing comes my way soon. Definately ready for it and being thankful now before it is even brought to me.

Took my kids to church today and they both went to their sunday school classes so I got to actually sit in the church service. They had a really neat puppet show after the classes and they did the puppets to blacklights......really neat.

One thing I am realizing and thankful for is that as my kids start to get a little older (still young 7 and 4 1/2) is that I kinda miss the baby ages but I like that we are starting to get to go out and do more things and I am sure that will get better as they get a bit older even.

Been letting stress get to me and things have been dragging me down and making me depressed so I have been giving into eating too much and the wrong things way too often. Had a bad weigh in yesterday with a couple of my groups. Doing good with getting my fitness minutes in though. Stayed in range with my eating yesterday and so far today. Trying to make myself try to include some fruits and veggies but I am bad with that. Get this ? Bought a bag of cherries recently and that was a new fruit for me to try and I was shocked to discover that they are messy and have a big pit/seed in them lol. Tried some canned zucchini in tomato sauce and did not like that at all. Usually when I do manage to eat freggies it is stuff like canned grean beans, cooked broccoli/cauliflower, bananas, grapes, sometimes apples......not much variety but some is better than none.

What has helped me is to breathe and talk with calmness and to allow silence in the room... I tend to talk to much when I get nervous. I also usually have questions about the job that shows that I know what I am doing... good luck!

Sending good thoughts your way for a successful interview. As others have stated, project confidence, and talk about helping children learn and grow in the classroom environment. Best of luck!

I certainly hope one of these jobs pans out. I would talk about how you love children and helping them to learn and grow and have fun. How rewarding it is to spend time with them. How you can learn things from them too. Let them know you are flexible. Open to new learning experiences.

I didn't like cherries at first too but love them now. Would not like zucchini with tomatoes though.

Good luck with your interview! It sounds perfect for you from what I know of you. :) You've got this! Mostly they'll want to know how you work with kids and how you will handle situation X or Y. If it's a federally funded Head Start, they will teach that children don't need to say I'm sorry if they aren't really deep down sorry. They just need to "make it better". They use the traffic light system - yellow for a watch it and stop that.. and red if they have not stopped or if it's a major offense like hitting, kicking, biting.. and when it gets to red they go to the Peace Table (which is a time out, but they don't call it that) to sit for a set number of minutes and then they talk to the teacher and then make it better to whomever they hurt. My son just finished two years at the Head Start. I was a member of the Policy Council the first year and also President of the NH Head Start Parent's Association. Also, the Policy Council votes on staff incoming and outgoing, so they will only have your resume to look at and whatever the teachers share.. Make sure you polish your resume and maybe a nice cover letter to go with it.. but you're probably past that with the interview coming up. Expect tiny chairs to sit in if you're in the actual classroom, and as a big person, this is one of the hardest parts of being in a preschool room so much.

LOL about the cherries!!! Did you like them despite the mess and pit?
Veggies - fresh or frozen are usually much better tasting than canned. I know canned is cheaper, but really.. it has to be fresh or frozen (flash frozen) for me.. I like sugar snap peas and green beans and broccoli in the steamfresh bags (frozen). Locally grown tomatoes and green beans are terrific.

Exude confidence!! Good luck on the interview!! Think of questions to ask ahead of time and WRITE them down and take that piece of paper that you wrote them down on with you so you don't forget to ask!!!

Good luck at your interview. Remember to speak confidently and clearly. Look your interviewer in the eye and speak as though you will be the best pre-school assistant they have ever seen. Practical experience is important...so make sure to be specific about the fun learning experiences you may have done with your own children. At that age, love, patience and understanding are KEY--so let your light shine and show them you deserve this position. Will be thinking of you!!
