I had a really great day yesterday! It started out with a trip to an urban farm for my internship. I had the whole day off afterwards, so after eating a delicous primal lunch, I headed to the beach at the lake closest to my house and I had it all to myself! I hung out there for about an hour, then headed to CrossFit for this:
Establish an approximate HS:
5 Rounds for time:
3 Deadlifts (335/235)
200 M Run
Our coach said to just work up to a heavy single to get ready for the WOD and not to try and PR or anything because that would just wear us out for the workout. I got up to 193# (My PR is 203# from just last week) and was going to be done, but my coach was watching.
Coach: Are you done?
Coach: What is that? 193? It didn't even look heavy.
Me: My PR is only 203. I tried for more in the total but failed.
Coach: I kinda want to see if you can pull a PR today.
Me: Let's do it.
So I added on 20# for 213# and picked it up, no problem at all! My coach said afterwards that it was exactly what he was talking about in the note he posted after the total. It all depends on the day.
Then it was WOD time. I used 173# for the deadlifts and my usual purple + red bands for the pull-ups. I thought the DL would be the hardest part of this WOD, but it was definitely the pull ups. After the 4th round, I noticed I was getting a small tear. I asked my coach if I should switch to jumping pull-ups, but he said to try to readjust my grip since I just had 20 more. I did my best, but I did tear it a bit more...and got a huge tear on my other hand that I didn't even notice until I was on my run. Eek. I've only had one tear before and it was pretty minor, now I have a legit one on each hand. I guess my time finally came. I thought I had been taking good care of my calluses. I just bought a pumice stone a few weeks ago and have been using it, but apparently it wasn't enough. I'm just hoping it doesn't take me out of commission for too long! Luckily this weekend my box is hosting a certification class, so instead of class, we're having workouts at my old college's track, so no barbells or pull-ups will be involved, so I should be fine to do that. Next week will probably be the perfect week to finally try the yoga class too. Please let me know any hand care tips you have!
Anyway, I finished in 16:59. My last round of pull-ups took a long time. There were just four of us in class and I was in 2nd place until the 5th round of pull ups and ended up finishing last. It was part being careful about tearing (although not careful enough apparently) and partly pure exhaustion! 100 pull ups is a lot!
After I got home, I got cleaned up and rode my bike to my friend's house for a stoop party (she is famous for her stoop parties). It was somehow the first one of the summer and it was a good time. I ended up having a few drinks, even though I wasn't planning on it, but I managed not to eat anything, which was hard because I watched two of my friends split the most delicious looking pizza ever and they kept offering it to the rest of us. If they had offered one more time, I might have given in, but luckily, they finished it off themselves.
Even with the torn up hands, it was a pretty great summer day!
