Oh wow...

I might be jumping the gun, but I am getting nervous anyways. A few weeks ago a friend of ours ended his life. Eric went to the funeral and discovered that one of his children, daughter age 14 or 15, was not there. No one seemed to know where she was but we have since found out that she was put into foster care immediately after his death by her step-mother. I have never known where the birth mother was in her life so this just made things more curious.

When we found out that Sapphire was put "in the system" we both said that if there was a way we'd like to have her come stay with us. Eric has been making some calls to social services out in their county and spoke with Sapphire's case worker yesterday. They have been trying to find someone in the family or a friend of the family who could/would take her but haven't had anyone come forward until now! The woman was happy to hear from us and is going to speak with Sapphire to see if she is amenable to living with us. We don't know if anything will come of this, but our fingers are crossed and prayers are being said that we will be able to help her.

We have someone coming over next week to help us get my craft room cleaned out and set up as a bedroom in anticipation. My guess is, if this is going to happen, it will happen fast! Even though we have never been foster parents I think they will just want to get her out of the immediate system as quickly as possible. We are two responsible adults who are willing and happy to have her live with us. We have a large home and large hearts... I think we are in for an interesting time!

You do have a huge heart to do this. Kids that age tend to get stuck in the system until 18 and then basically dumped. I'm so happy she will have you as a family.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

God bless you for being open to this major change in your life. You may very possibly be the lifeline for Sapphire and you will certainly be rewarded in more ways than you can count. I will pray that this works out for the best. Foster care is hard on anyone but it is going to be especially hard on a girl who has lost her father in such a dreadful way. It will take a lot of love, patience, and probably counseling to get her and you through this. How many other siblings does she have? Will she be able to see them or stay in contact with them in some way?

I now teach but worked for the Dept. of Children and Families, dealing with kids in foster care and adoptive situations. You are a HERO in my eyes.
