My husband is on a medically supervised diet and doing great!

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I am so happy for my husband. He has lost 30 pounds in the past couple of months. He is on a weight management program from the Health Plan we have. It is a meal product and is very closely supervised by the doctor. It is also expensive, but he really needs to get the weight off for his health.
The program includes a mandatory class each week with the group of people that you started the diet with. (Just like on Spark where our friends encourage us and share with us.) I tried to get into the class, but my BMI was not high enough (needed to be 10 pounds heavier, no thanks!); however, I am benefiting from the classes he is taking anyway. The classes are about changing your life style just like here on Spark. I am finding that it is easier for me to stick to my "good eating habits" when I do not have to cook for my husband and when we don't go out to eat.
Another thing that is helping me is that I am eating 3 small meals and 3 even smaller snacks a day-- (similar to how he is eating--6 products a day.) This keeps me from feeling hungry and I know there is another meal or snack coming up so I don't sneak snacks. The meals are much smaller than I am used to eating (about 1/2 my usual portion) and the snacks are 100 calories or less. (A yogurt cup, piece of fruit, vegie salsa, sliced tomato, etc.) I am also writing down everything I eat. I hope to have time to log it into Spark one of these days. I have finally lost a few pounds -- after a whole year of no progress. Losing the weight is a real incentive to keep trying. I was getting pretty discouraged after not losing for so long. Now I am encouraged that I am making progress even if it is painfully slow.
I am in the middle of several projects right now (fence, garden, company, remodel bathroom, and refinish buffet.) so I am only getting on Spark occasionally. Thanks for all the encouragement from my Spark Friends. Don't give up on me! I will be back is the fall.

Marilyn, I've missed you! I wondered where you've been and glad to hear all's well. I didn't realize you were having such a hard time losing weight. But I know you've gone on cruises and you travel to visit the kids, which makes it very difficult to stick to any routine. When you're not home, none of your activities are routine so how could your eating habits be? I'm so glad to hear you've lost weight and now you and your husband can support each other, which is a HUGE help. Hope to hear more from you in the fall as promised. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your comments.
--yes, they have classes each week with a different topic. When they start to cut down on the number of products eaten each day and transition to regular food they have classes on recipes, cooking, and shopping. They will even have a chef come in to talk to the class. (I hope to go to some of these classes with my husband so I can get some tips since I am the shopper and cook in the family.)
My biggest problem is snacking and meal size. I love the taste of food! I am learning to replace it with sugarless gum and half size portions and single servings with no seconds. Very hard for me!

    How very exciting!

Do they provide him (and you vicariously) with information on shopping, cooking and eating once he is off their meal products? I think that is sometimes one of the hardest transition points I see people hit.

And emoticon to you on your progress. I love the smaller meal and snacks style myself for a similar reason. I prefer to not wait until I'm very hungry to eat.
