MY PANTRY CHALLENGE: - August through December, in 2 phases, Summer and Fall.
The pantry challenge is basically a challenge to eat from the pantry, focusing meal planning according to ingredients on hand and utilizing current stock first, with limited trips to the grocery store. The “Pantry” encompasses the pantry, freezer, fridge, and anywhere else food is stored in the house.
Plan meals and experiments based on ingredients in the pantry.
Reduce stocked food and waste by utilizing food on hand first.
Become more organized and less wasteful.
Exercise financial and self- discipline, and reduce grocery spending overall.
Become less impulsive and reduce trips to the grocery store.
Be a better planner.
I’ve taken inventory and I have a lot of planning to do, but a great variety to work with. I’ve already started with a plan for this weekend’s meal: Pork tenderloin, mixed greens, and fingerling potatoes that need to be used soon.
Limit trips to the grocery store and cut out impulsive stops.
Replenish produce and dairy no more than 1x per week, if needed, through summer. By Fall I plan for this to be revised to every 2 weeks, forcing me to be a better planner. Fall cooking will shift to fresh and canned goods for soups, casseroles, and crock pot cooking, along with frozen veggies for side dishes.
I'm ready to get started!
