Several people have asked how I broke my ankle and I promised to let everyone know as soon as I could write it all out.
Three of us were traveling from Branson, Missouri to Bardstown, Kentucky and stopped in Metropolises, Illinois to see the Super Man Statue.
My friends wanted some more pictures so I took their cameras and walked to the point in the star that was raised about two feet above the ground. There was a fence around the outside of the star with a couple of steps up at the point. I climbed up the steps, took the pictures and while looking at a camera I stepped forward instead of down! Needless to say forward is not where I went. I think that the heel of my right foot hit the step below as I fell forward and that is what caused the break. My other leg sustained some scratches and the middle finger of my right had was a little sore but that was it. All the damage was on my right ankle with two bones being broken. One was the tibia which I believe came through the skin and then another bone on the other side of the ankle. Superman was right there but he did NOT save me!
Because of where the Superman statue is located the local police were there in moments and the ambulance with medics right behind.
When I went to lift my leg we saw the my right leg wen in a strange angle because of the break and I was told to put my leg back down and not lift it again. I was asked about the level of pain and explained that it was minimal. They were surprised.
Because of where we were located the policy was to take the patient to the best facility even if it meant crossing a state line so I was taken across the river to Paducah, Kentucky where the best orthopedic hospital and surgeon was and was in the operating room around 4:30 p.m. because ex-rays and some equipment was needed first. I do not remember some of this so must have been given something that put me out. I do remember leaving for the hospital but I do not remember arriving nor being in the emergency room or having x-rays taken. I was conscious when they were removing my clothes and asked them to save my new culottes if possible but just cut my underclothes off. Go figure.
I do remember waiting to go into the operating room and then it was the next morning and I was up on the 5th floor.
Anyway do not count on Superman helping you if you take a tumble even if you are standing right in front of him.
